New/Old Car

I want to buy a 1987 Corvette. It's real sharp and it's got 60,000 miles on it and they are only asking $8500.00, There are no scatches Grey Paint, All original parts and has been serviced all the time. Garage kept. All leather seats, Glass top, Bose Sound System with Cassette, power seats, and custom stainless steal exaust system. Is this a good deal? You would seriously think that this car was brand new! and it never had a paint job!

Also, I have heard that some people have had a problem when they deaccelerate to make a right hand turn, they go out of control and the brake will not respond. Is this true? or was it called back to the factory back in 87? This car has been driven since and it has not done this I don't think. Atleast, the Prev. owner tells me it hasn't done it.

Thanks,

Big Kay

Welcome To The Corvette Action Center VetteMan18!

Big Kay, sounds like you got yourself a real sweetheart of an '87 there; I say go for it if it checks out mechanically. Does it include all service records and other paperwork?

As for the loss of control thing with the brakes, I have never heard of such a thing, but now it looks like I have some research to do in order to verify whether this was an issue or not. ;)

Welcome aboard! :upthumbs

Sounds like a good deal to me. I agree with Ken. See if all the service records are up to date and have someone who knows what they are doing look at the car for you. Welcome to the CAC, you will always get good advice here!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for responding so quickly. It has all the service maintence logs and receipts. It also has the original documentation and the paperwork for the vehicle. I will be the 3rd owner of this vehicle. It was sent down from a Doctor who originally bought it, went to my friend's father who bought it, and last but not least to me.

I do have a website to back up some of what I said about the car going out of control. Not sure if it is true or not but take a look and let me know. Thanks for the welcome!

info on out of control car: http://www.c4vettes.com/87pb.htm
and it's the 1st one and the 6th one. Like I said, I am not sure if these reports are true.

Thanks,

Big Kay

p.s. - Since i'm new to Corvette's, any tips you guys have, feel free to leave some!

Sorry I took so long getting back, I got tied up in something else.

Yes, we have that information here at the :CAC (Search result for: FUEL:THROTTLE LINKAGES AND CONTROL).

I have not experienced the problem myself, nor has anyone brought this up before. I can only assume that none of the membership has had this problem.

If someone has had the problem occur, hopefully they will see this thread and respond with their experiences. Both the problem itself as well as the dealer's handling of it. ;)

Ok, Well thanks a lot.

Keep me posted and if you have any advice.

Thanks

I checked http://www.alldata.com/TSB/10/87100604.html but saw nothing in a quick look, in the way of a recall.

There was a rear-end problem in the '84 which was quite nasty, if it happened at speed. I saw no such recall on the '87.

Sounds like quite a nice RIDE, pal. Congrats on the find.

man that sounds like a sweet deal! jump on it!

i've never experienced anything like what you are talking about in my 87. i bought mine 1 1/2 years ago with 30k on the clock. just turned 50k and mostly no problems except your average any car problems. altenator, fuel pump and now a slight brake problem that the dealer is fixing.

other than that i am very pleased with my 87!

Yeah, I think I am defintly going to jump on it. I know a corvette specialist in a dealership and im going to see if he can take a look at it and do a inspection before I buy to make sure everything is fine. One thing is that the ABS Light stays on. The owner said when I buy it, he'll replace the fuse. He says its a fuse or bulb.

Thanks,

Big Kay

p.s - Glad you have not experienced any troubles! I think maybe it's just some were fualty or something. I'm looking at it as its been driven a good amount of miles and nothing has happened to the previous owners so.

Hey and welcome to:CAC
I doubt the ABS light staying on is a fuse or bulb though, more likely a sensor at best or an indicator of a real problem at worst. Check it out. c4vettes.com has all recalls and trouble area descripts.
Sounds like a good deal tho...

I have had my 87 for 12 yrs and have never experienced anything like that.

Sounds a lot like the "unattended acceleration" problem that plagued Audi in the late 80's.
(They solved the problem by moving the gas and brake a pedals farther apart ;) )

Hey,

I'm glad to here that. I am feeling better about this. I am taking this to a local dealer tomorrow and have him check it out and check the engine and suspension along with the body.

Thanks,

Big Kay

I've had my 86 Z51 since 1989. Never experienced anything of
that nature. BUT, as far as the ABS is concerned, don't listen
to the "it's just a fuse" nonsense. My ABS light stays on also.
I've replaced some of the easier (read: cheaper) relays and
checked the wheel sensors, but still have the ABS light.
Chevrolet dealer says BIG BUCKS to fix. So at this point in
time the light will have to stay on.
Good luck

Mike

Does that mean that the whole ABS System is shot?

Thanks,

Big Kay

VetteMan18 - Sorry for not getting back yesterday P.M. -
the wife had some "honey-do's" and that ment no
computer.
I really can't answer that if the ABS light is on that the
whole system is shot. GM has a diagnostic tool that will
pinpoint the ABS problem (or so I'm told). My dealer
had one but when they moved to a new location the
ABS tester was lost.
Maybe the C4/C5 Specialist could shed some light on
the subject. I too would like my ABS operational.
Mike

vetteman,

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo......did you buy it?????
Or what........
thanks
tony

Thanks for the report on the breaks! I am going to buy it but before I do, I have to take it too a local corvette specialist to have him check it out, well actully the owner is. So, then I can see what I am getting myself in or out off. I'll keep you posted on the progress and let you know about the ABS light though.

Thanks,

Big Kay
