I'm thinking about possibly replacing the fuel pump to eliminate that as a possible cause of the problem.

Be very careful about spending money on something, just because you want to "eliminate that as a possible cause of a problem". You'll go broke! Get yourself a copy of the '84 Factory Service/Shop Manual (FSM). (eBay, or Helm inc, Detroit MI, are two sources.) Don't waste your money on the Chilton's style books, unless you haven't yet figured out how to change your oil. Do accurate trouble shooting to find a problem, rather than guessing! That's the very best way to save money and learn good mechanicing skills (new word there), and you'll be proud to have found the problem yourself. IF you run into questions, we're here to help!
