As most of you know, my engine is out. THe guy at the shop told me to replace the factory torque converter.

He recommends going with a 2400, but a 2000 would be okay. He said that the acceleration would be very noticable. He recommends a B and M, which out of jegs is like 239.00.

Any thoughts??

2400 stall converter

I bought a 2400 stall coverter in May when I had my trany rebuilt. Makes a big difference in the way the car accelerates especially when you get on it. I would do it!

Factory is already 2000 in 86. If you liked it, then put another in.

I would spend the money on a tranny cooler.

So what is the best way to determine what stall you have? I have been told to power brake the car till the rears start spinning then let off till they stop, then that is basically your stall.

I thought from a previous thread here that the stock stall on our cars was about 1500. I will have to do a search. Yes how do you determine which torque converter you have.

How big a difference? And do I need a tranny cooler right away. My pocket book is pretty maxed out.

My tany rebuilder asked if my vette ran hot, and if it did to think about a trany cooler. It runs as any other gets hot standing still and what I did was to use Moble 1 ATF fliud. They advertse the same high temp type ratings as the engine oil. A litle expensive but hey I thought it was worth it. It's been 2 months now and no problems

My car runs cooler then most, with a lower thermostat and the fans coming on sooner. I might think about a tranny cooler in the future but cant right now. I would like the increase in performance though.

A new torque converter will add a little zip. Think about rebuilding the trany. Unfortunetly I had to have mine done becouse it 3 and 4 disintigrated. So I had my rebuilt with performance clutches, shift kit, a Beast sun shell and 5 gear planitaries. All that and the new converter was $1900 and I removed the trany. It was worth every penny of it! Runs great!

The tranny is good for now, it shifts okay. I think that may be the expense for next year.

So If I go with a 2400 I should feel some difference?

I suggest going with Mobil 1 synthetic fluid. As for the TC, I say go for it. You'll probably do it soon anyway so may as well get it out of the way. I've heard great things about B&M.

Yeah that is what the builder told me. I will go with that, I think I saw one for 239.00 bucks. Remember I wont be at the track until next year at cruisefest, which should be fun.:)
