I'm looking to replace the Weather Striping on my 1981 T-Tops, Foward Pillars and Door Glass Rear. I was going to order the parts from "The Last Detail" in Ga. as they had the best price on my OE seat covers I just installed. And appear to have the best price on Weather Striping also. My seat covers actually came from Corvette America!
Question...is there anything I should know before I attempt this job? Easy/hard?
Thanks for any info.

Make sure to use the BLACK 3M adhesive and not the YELLOW. If you get excess yellow adhesive squeezing out around the weatherstrip it looks like $hit. After applying the adhesive let it get a little tacky then apply the weatherstrip. I held mine in place with masking tape.

seat covers

Hammer, I just ordered a bunch of interior stuff from the last detail like seat covers, carpet, moldings, weatherstripping, etc..

I'm restoring the interior of a 1968 coupe. Any hints on tackling that seat cover job?!?! I ordered the install kit but have never tried to do covers before. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip about the Black Adhesive...tluv327, I'll e-mail ya about the seats...as some people get ****y about topic changes. Oh well ...no e-mail address. > Your seats are different than my 81 style seats...now I tend to belive yours will be easer. The one thing I would suggest is to do one seat at a time (one cushion that is) And keep the other one within reach to use as a guide...I did the work on my kitchen table. I took apart one seat at a time and quickly saw how the new covers had to go on...With my 81 seats I first had to secure the center sections whether it was the bottom or back. Once thats done I pulled the cover over the front and back part of the seat (the long rods have to be installed by this time)...then it was a matter of securing the sides of the cover...pulling everything tight and locking the Hog Rings in along the way. Thats how I would do it. Just take your time and everything will be fine. And get a good set of Hog Ring Plyers.
Also let me know the quality of that weather striping...and if it comes from Corvette America...thanks.

weatherstripping

Hammer, thanks for the info.

The weatherstripping I ordered was 2 pieces for the pillar posts. I don't believe these came from corvette america because they arrived packaged seperately and before the remainder of my order came. The weatherstripping itself seems to be flawless and of good quality but I haven't installed them yet.

I'll be sure to edit my profile with that email address.:duh

Any contact info for the last detail? I'd like to order the weatherstrip from them if it is that good and reasonably priced to boot!

Thanks,
Dave

...just for a price comparison/ sanity check, you may want to check out Corvette Rubber at http://www.corvette-rubber.com I got my door weather stripping and rear deck weather stripping from them, and was very pleased with pricing/etc.

I picked up my weather striping from "The Last Detail". It is good quality and cost was less than most sites. I replaced the front window Pilars, rear window pilars, doors. I don't know if anyone else can answer this for you but the problem I have now is that the windows do not seal or track correctly. I don't think I did anything wrong. Let me know how it works out for you.

I have found that all aftermarket weatherstrips are not quite as soft and pliable as the originals. Hence they sometimes don't conform to the mating surface and seal as well. This I have found especially true on the rear glass vertical w/s on my own car. I compared the one I bought at Corvette Rubber to one I ordered in at work from GM. The GM one is very soft and has a slight contour to it as the original to seal against the glass. The Corvette Rubber one is very hard and is basically straight. I have been having problems with wind noise because it won't fit the glass properly. The only problem with buying the GM seal (which I probably will get eventually) is it cost $100 with my discount for that small 10" piece! The GM weatherstrips are mostly still available, but very expensive. I have a customer of mine who bought a w/s kit (aftermarket) for his 87 Monte SS. He could not get any of the weatherstrips to seal properly due thier hardness.
I ended up getting a whole set for him in GM and heavily discounting it for him and he said it made a world of difference.

There must be somplace besides GM $$$

I've here of some "sub-par" weather strip pieces out ther...However I'm not looking to pay the GM price!
There must be some body making quality rubber.
I havent ordered my needed pices yet until I here some feed back from people that purchased weather striping from,
*Corvette America
*Corvette Rubber
*The Last Detail...etc.
Comments....

Hammer, I purchased my new rubber from "The Last Detail". It seems to be good quality, but as mentioned in an earlier reply, the rear window rubber seems to be thicker and harder. This is not allowing the window to seal properly. I have tried to adjust the window, following the instructions in the AIM but I can't get the windows to come in far enough to make a tight seal. Let me know what you find out about your application.

Thanks

Wiley,
Have you called The Last Detail and asked for their assistance? I was wondering if they have any output or help when it comes to one of the products they sell. When we were restoring my wives 67 camaro I found that it was more beneficial to get good customer service than good price. That being said, if you can get both....

jdads2, I have not asked for technical assistance form them as of yet, however the good thing about my purchase from them is I can actually have a face to face meeting. The other products I have purchase from them and their service so far has been outstanding. I make trips to Atlanta frequently and I visit offten.

I'll let you know what they say when I speak to them again.

Thanks

Wiley

Weaterstrips

Pertaining to that rear glass weatherstrip. I got it to seal against the glass about 90% effectively by actually bending it to the inner curvature of the window and shaving parts of it. Its functional but not the way it should be. I used corvette rubber w/s on the doors and T-tops with no apparent problem. It's just those rear glass w/s that are the problem.

I agree on the TLD for the best prices but Id have to disagree on the adhesive. The black oozing out is going to look worse than the yellow.Ive replaced alot of weatherstrip and I always use a clear adhesive that is made by Transtar.Youll find it at most paint stores.Usually I have found that if your windows dont seal good to it ,its probably out of adjustment. :w

Soft Seal???

Anyone ever here of "Soft Seal"??? My bud says there the place to get "soft" weather striping...he ordered my pieces today.

Hammerdown, haven't heard of soft seal....would be courious to see how it works....keep us posted.

Update...

I picked up my Weather Striping today...and as my Corvette Specialist friend said...this stuff is almost Butter soft. He explained how all the other suppliers product was not up to there standards and only uses the Striping I now have. (soft Seal)?
It's made in Canada and came from ....
Corvette Paramedics Inc.
Mount Holly New Jersy 08060
Phone# 609-265-2702.
I've been there before for some odd ball parts.

He sold it to me for his cost, (hey were friends)...a little bit more $ than the inferior stuff...No biggie.
He also gave me some good tips on how to install...and suggested I use the Black 3-M Adhesive

So there's my input/cure for the "hard/stiff" weatherstriping.
