Twice now I have been hearing a weird sound from the under side of the car. It is hard to describe. It’s kind of like a bell ringing sound, metal on metal. Kind of like a clanging sound. It happens especially right when I shut it down.

Any ideas?

By the way. Hello fellas. It's been a long time. Feel like I've been in a one-legged butt kicking contest. :bash

Things finally starting to turn around.

I have a simular sound with my 85. I had it up on a hoist and it seems to be the exhaust system. The pipe after the cat seems to be producing the noise. On mine there is what appears to be a heat shield on the top of the pipe (between the pipe and the under body).. The noise seems to come from there. I haven't done more to source it as I plan to pull the exhaust this winter. Mine only makes this noise when in stopped. Noise is infrequent.

Thanks, that is exactly what I get! Wow! I will have to put it on jacks and have a look. Thanks. It's a good place to start.

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

AS the exhaust system cools of it can make some unusual noises

I have heard those ticking noises before but not like this. This is new. It is like something is loose and ringing and it does it when I pull in the garage with the engine still running just when I pull to a stop.

I'm gonna have to jack it and see what it could be. Any other ideas besides the heat shield if I find that to be okay?

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

fuel line clanging on my 87

i had a bizarre clanging on my 87, matter of fact the guy that sold it to me said his uncle (who owned the car before him) sold it to him because he couldn't find the clanging clacking sound. So I searched and searched after it drove me crazy but after a really good post here that had several items to check, it turned out to be one of those items. The fuel lines just above the passenger side muffler where clanging against the bottom of the frame... ;LOL

I was so happy. I stuck a piece of rubber in between the lines and the frame, there is a place for a black rubber bushing in there I think that must have fallen out. No more clanging. I got that car cheap cause nobody could figure out what that mysterious clang clack sound was ;LOL

just in case you don't find it, thought i'd share in case you got same issue.

good luck:w

Thanks Tony, will look into it.

Hi Paul. You describe the noise as a ticking noise. I also had a "ticking" noise that I would describe as sounding like rocks rolling around in a cup. This was a different sound then the clanging noise I was getting from my exhaust. The "ticking" noise happened only as I started to move or when slowing to stop. Turned out to be my U joints... Only one was bad but since they were replacing one i fiigured I may as well replace all. Once replaced..ticking noise gone. Just something else you may want to check out while its up on the hoist....

cheers,
Rick

I had a 'rock in a tin can' sound a few years back in my '92 and it turned out to be the converter - the catalyst inside the converter was breaking up and rattleing.

glad things are turning around for you finally paul...glad your back:thumb

I haven't had a chance to jack it and lube the u-joint fittings.

More bad news today. Because of all the stress I have been under I have been having a lot of irregular heartbeats so now I have to go to the cardiologist on Wednesday and wear a monitor for a month. To say I ain't scared would be a supreme understatement.
