I'm gonna say that the "C" stands for Corvette.

BTW...Welcome to the CAC!

Yeap, if I remember correctly, they didn't really start referring to them as C-1s - C-5s, now C-6s' until the C-5 came along.

Also, welcome!

C5 and above

You are correct, the C5 looks like a RX7 so they call it C5. Back when the C4's we called them Corvettes not C4, specially the 86/yellow convertible, that was a bad ass Corvette!!! (back in late 85)..still is!!!

The new 2005 is a great looking Corvette!!

This "C#" designation didn't get started until the 90's with the 'new' 1997 Corvette just around the corner. Before that, they were referred to by generation names like

Straight Axle - 1953 to 1962
MidYear or Stingray - 1963 to 1967
Shark - 1968 to 1982
Late Model - 1984 and up.

With the "C5" coming, the old "Late Model' couldn't be "late model" anymore. Off and on the media and maybe GM have tried to introduce 'generation' numbers to the Corvette and this time it seems to have stuck.

I've got an older Corvette book on the shelf that listed the generations differently - refering to them by body style changes. In this particular book, the 53-55 was tagged as the "first" generation. The 56 and 57 were 'second' generation while the 58 to 62 is listed as 'third' generation. You can take it from there.

Spot on, Tuna

I think I have that same old book that broke out '53-'55 and '56-57, then it became solid axle, etc. And the post about the C-# coming out with the C-5's, since C4 was no longer the "late model". The Camaro went through the same thing, and I think the media and general public just kind of adapted the generation #'s as utilized on the Camaro to the Corvette in a similar fashion.

Wecome aboard, new member. Enjoy the site!

what is so peculiar about all this, is in 1968 they discontiued the StingRay name and there was such a fuss about it that, they brought the name back in 1969....

As much as that was confusing, I still don't like the C-# action.

Actually, I might. I made one for my '71; made it nice to sit on the front tires to do engine work.

I like any Vette, especially those that are paid for and runs reliably.

I'd love to have the first of each generation, with a BBC in a '53 kit on a late model chassis, for towing. That won't happen any time soon, but I am newly considering a C-4 frame under my '55 F-100.
