Looking to reinforce its performance credentials, General Motors introduced the fastest car in its history at the North American International Auto show Monday.
The new 500-horsepower Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 has a top speed of 190 m.p.h. and accelerates to 60 m.p.h. in less than four seconds, GM chief Tom Stephens said.
Chevrolet launched the new Corvette just last year, but the ZO6 is virtually a different car, despite its similar looks.
Derived from Chevy's successful Corvette racing program, the ZO6 has an all-new chassis that replaces the conventional car's steel parts with lightweight aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber.
It also features the most powerful production engine GM has ever built, a 7.0-liter 500-horsepower version of the company's legendary 50-year-old small block V8.
GM also introduced the most powerful car ever from its Cadillac luxury brand, the 440-horsepower STS-V sedan. The car is based on the new STS midsize luxury sedan that went on sale last year.
In addition to a new supercharged 4.4-liter version of Cadillac's Northstar V8, the STS-V has a wire-mesh grille reminiscent of the V16 cars Cadillac built at the height of its powers in the 1930s.
The cars join the exciting new Saturn roadster and sedan GM unveiled Sunday.
"We are on a quest to revitalize our brands," said GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz.
