My brake pedal on my 89 is SOOOO hard to depress?? It does stop the car, but with a lot of force. The ABS activates everytime I start the car (the light comes on for about 2-3 seconds after I first get going, can hear the activation), I bleed the system, and it didn't seem like any air was trapped. Could I get ANY and ALL advise about this before I hit a tree?? Thanks

The problem is fairly recent. How would I check the vacuum for the brake booster?? It just seems to need so much energy to stop the car??

One of 2 things....you have lost vacuum to the booster or the diaphram in the booster has failed.
In which case you will need to replace it. The hose off the booster has a check valve in it, it allows the booster to pull vacuum but not let it return back into the hose, a failure of the check valve will provide similar symptoms. From the booster the hose goes to the rear of the intake on the drivers side.

Is the engine idling unusually high or does the engine speed increase when you step on the brakes?

Either of these conditions is a 100% confirmation of Eagle’s diagnoses, however it is also possible for the check valve to fail without affecting engine speed.

you know, as a matter of fact, the idle does seem a little higher than normal. I will check the check valve in the vacuum line and how would I actuallt check the booster itself for a vacuum leak?? Thanks for all the help with this one as the ones in the past !!

Ok, my wife accuses me of kissing every thing that moves, so I have no problem with this.

Pull the hose off of the check valve, stick it in your mouth and suck. When you have sucked as much as possible, plug the hose with your tongue. If your tongue stays stuck to the hose the booster is Ok, if your tongue comes unglued its new booster time.

This is the most unprofessional advice available today. What the heck, I am on my 3rd. Jim Bean and who knows, it just might work.

Hmmmm. I'm thinking we need an mpeg detailing this procedure. Please post one asap. :D

Did your mama tell you to be careful of what you ask for because you just might get it?

I hope you enjoy this. I guess that just about blows my credibility so to speak.:L

Omigod! I go away for a week to play guitar with friends, and when I come back from relaxing and enjoying myself this is what I see!

The horror. The horror.

Kathy

ps: Actually, this is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time. If only all technical info could be this, well, suggestive.... :gap

Play guitar? Do tell....

What kind of guitar and what kind of music? Do you sing as well?:_rock

SPANISHVETTS,

What the heck is a violation of the 24 hour usage limit that causes your instuctional photo to be unavailable to me? Will I be able to see it later, or will I have to live the rest of my life not knowing how to perform this diagnostic miracle that you've described:J

I have a Mexican Fender Strat, an Ovation model 1867, and I am eyeing a thinbody Martin at the moment.

Last week's retreat was 18 women musicans, from amatures like myself to professionals, gathered in a retreat camp to work on composition, singing, and performance. We ran seminars for each other to highlight certain skills, and did challenges, such as having 45 minutes to compose, practice and perform in random groups. During the week I got to perform on a friend's new punk piece, "Psycho B**ch from Hell," and I also played djembe in one perfromance (I had some drum training about 20 years ago)

I only picked up the guitar two years ago, and so I am by no means accomplished. But it is fun, and I am learning pretty quickly. Mostly I play accoustic rock/folk.

And btw: I drove the Vette down there and back for the retreat week. The car was definitely a star - I was forced to give a few rides on those Virginia back roads (it was torture, I tell you!). ;)

Interesting....I play acoustic.....3 Guilds, 2 Martins and 2 Gibsons....1 each are 12 strings...rest 6's...

Hey 89Blkvet,

Now that your thread has been totally hijacked by guitarists and tube-sucking video - did you ever find the solution to the brake problem? Certainly don't want any tree encounters in your future.

Kathy

I did find the problem............I removed the booster and there was this HUGE crack in it. Now I am tasked with finding a new one??? Besides the catalogs of well over $250, does anyone have ideas??
