Needing miracles

Guest
This is my first time posting to this site. I'm in DESPERATE need of help with an electrical short.

I bought a '92 convertible that was not running. The digital readout appeared dead and starter would not crank. I purchased a HELM shop manual to help diagnose the problem. After performing several tests it appeared that the CCM (BCM) was fried. I replaced the CCM and everything worked perfect for 3 days....now it is back to the same problem.

It seems to be a short because I can disconnect the battery for a few days then reconnect and everything appears fine for a minute or two and then IP goes haywire, digital readout blanks out and starter will not crank again.

I can jumper the start enable module and start the engine but the digital readout remains blanked out. Also connected to this short appears to be the sleep/awake functions of the CCM which includes the interior lights and backlighting to the IP, radio, and A/C control readout. Reading through the HELM manual I cannot identify the connection that ties all these things together. Since the start enable module is involved it seems like something to do with the security system or maybe the VATS??

Any ideas where I should look for a bad connection that ties to all these? Could the ECM be causing these symtoms?

VATS wouldn't kill any of your instrumentation lighting. It would interupt the start and fuel circuits only.

It sounds like you've got the correct books (you do have the Electrical Supplement manual don't you? ;)) and have hit all the right checks so far, but I'm no electrician, that's for sure. :L

Someone will be along that will have the electrical knowledge to lead you in the right direction. Hang in there and good luck! :CAC

Welcome to our community, by the way. :w

Did you have the CCM programmed after installation? Until you do, if the 92 is the same as 95, you are restricted to driving 100 miles. If you go over that then the CCM is not re-programmable...etc. Just curious.

I have not had the CCM programmed. The manuals only showed me how to program the VATS on the new CCM. Is there something additional I Need to have programmed? At this point I'm not sure that I can do any programming because the digital display goes dead after a couple of minutes with the key in the run position.
By the way....thanks for the feedback!

If you have the Helm's manual, look at section 8D-80 in Book 1. Again I don't know of the changes relative to the differential in our years, Maybe someone with a 92 can chime in re: CCM Programming/EEPROM Download. It states when the CCM is replaced it has to be programmed for your vats/pass key that came with the vehicle. It requires a Tech-1 or CAMS (T-100) to reprogram the CCM.

It stresses that the vehicle NOT be driven over 100 miles, after CCM replacement, or the download cannot be done. :eek :eek :eek
