my 1989 will not fire up on the first set of cranks, but will start up right away when you stop cranking and start cranking again. I was thinking maybe the burn off relay, or oil pressure sensor. I have 40+ pounds of gas pressure, new injectors, gas pressure regulator, new plugs and wires, cap and rotor. I also smell gas when I shut down after running. I can find on leaks. I had this same problem before replacing parts. Anyone have ideas. thanks Mike

the fuel bleeds off during the night. In the morning the pump has to refill the rails. The engine has to crank several times for the injectors to cycle and push out the air. IMO

not sure what that means, and what is possible fix I put on gauge and the gas pressure held for a long period of time before it started dropping. this happens even when I stop to go to store and back out to start it.

Instead of first cranking, try turning the key on for 5 seconds, turn off, turn on for 5 seconds and crank.

Did it Start?

If so,Fuel filter plugged or fuel pump on it's way out/or both! :D

If it don't,We'll try something else.:L

Well I did'nt know that was a quick way to check the fuel filter and or pump. I'll file that one away for future reference. So today I learned something new. Thanks Junk for that info.

Seems you covered all the bases but the one that was the issue. You need to find that gasoline leak, causing the odor, which can be a bugger. No puddling anywhere on the intake?

Well I didn't know that was a quick way to check the fuel filter and or pump.
This is what I recommended to my mom for her Caddy, but I did it 'cause I thought the injectors may have been dirty and leaking upon a few-day sit, even on the low miles, little-driven car. I also suggested Lucas FI cleaner and a high detergent gasoline.

Yaaay, junk!

can not find any gas leak anywhere. while I was looking around, I did find that there might be something broken off or missing on top of a round device, not sure what you call it, but something to do with recyle of gas fumes. It is the metal can in the left front, under the hood, which has several rubber hoses going to it. I'm trying to find a picture of it to see what should be there. Also. I turned the key on, waited about 10 seconds, turned it off and back on again, and tried starting it. No difference. It started right up on second round of cranking. I looked and found that the device I was talking about was the fuel vapor canister. there is a small crack in the top of it, and I found a hole in one of the lines going to or coming from it that was taped up. I ordered new canister and replaced the hose. just have to wait and see if that fixes fuel smell. don't know about non cranking problem yet.

Awesome. Glad U got it going and posted for others to see/learn. :w

was that the mass airflow burn-off relay

replaced the burn off relay today, and she cranks on first turn every time now.:w:happyanim:

I have the same problem and replaced the MAF burnoff and power relays. Still have the same problem and also have been getting getting a code 36 - MAF Burnoff relay. I also replaced the MAF sensor, fuel filter, plugs, wires ECM distributor cap. Been going on for months now.

The code only tells you the circuit is not sending the correct code to the ecm. Check the wires for each sensor for a broken one or a bad ground. Think of it this way. You have a well for your water and you have a pump (think sensor) in it. You turn on the faucet (ECM) and get a trickle of water (signal to the ecm) Now if the pipe from the pump to the faucet is broken you can replace the pump or faucet all you want but you still will only have a trickle of water until you fix the pipe. The trick here is to find the correct pipe to fix since you have a main pipe that feeds the whole house (car). Since many faucets are on the water line and some may have good water flow that would mean they are before the break in the pipe (wire). Oh and remember all the pipes (wires) were put in new but are now over 20 years old and time has corroded them and made them brittle. If you try to take them apart ( pulling on the wire connector or wires to remove from the sensor)they may snap into. Sometimes we get in a box and can't see beyond it. I just expanded the box your in good luck.
