I just got a new hood emblem. It does not have any threads on it. it has 2 smooth hickys stick'n out of it. So I can't bolt it down with any nuts. If i put on thoes circular metal clips (them ones that slide on that can't come off in the same direction) i won't be able to get up in thoes little holes under the hood to get them back off if needed.

Are all the emblems like that?? my car didn't have one on it when i got it

Mine is a GM part. i didn't get it from MID AMERICA or anything

The nuts are those stamped steel self-tapping nuts available at the dealer or from any parts stores that carry miscellaneous fasteners and trim fasteners. One brand is called Help! and is packaged on red paper backing.

When you attach the hood emblem, use a deep socket and spread some heavy grease on the nut and the socket tip. this will keep the nut from falling into the abyss of the hood and frame. Keep a magnetic pickup tool handy just in case!!

yeah i was thinking about getting a few nuts and tapping it. but i wasn't sure if thoes little tabs would break off.
It feels like the embems are made of plastic. but they get cold like metal, and if you put them up to your mouth they give you that metal tingly feeling. you know what they are made of??

The entire emblem is pot metal. The posts are part of the casting and will take the torque needed for the nut to cut some very thin threads into the post.

I think the nuts will need a 3/8 or 7/16 deep-well socket. They might be a PITA to start on the post so you might want to start the nuts by turning them just a turn or two and carefully back them off the post.

It will help if you have somebody to push on the emblem from the hood side while you start the nuts from the inside. I use a 14" drive ratchet with a 2" extension and a deep socket. When the nut begins to get tight, stop. Just snug it up.

install the nuts on the work bench to pre thread the posts, remove the nuts, install the part on the car and now the nuts will go on easier.
