Question: noise coming from back

When I shift I getting a clunk from what seems to be the rear end. It's a 95 Vette , and ideas on where I should start. Frank
The clunk comes from slack in the drive train it maybe bad ujoints check them first (the car has 6 of them) if they are tight chances are the slack maybe coming from the rear differential internally or the bolts or bushing around it!
Are your rear lugnuts tight?

<When I shift> Stick then?

I have an auto and mine has had that clunk since its purchase at 10,000 miles! My clunk appears on mostly right-hand turns when I gave it gas coming out of a turn. Still does this and its not significantly louder now (45,000 miles) than when I first noticed it. Once in a blue moon when shifting from 2nd to 3rd under moderate acceleration (not turning) I can feel a very slight clunk (this is new). It seems to clunk more often when it is hot rather than cold. Funny thing.. when I shift from Prk to Dr or Prk to Rev or Rev to Dr there is no clunk. I would expect that there would be.

I've heard many account where owners have replaced dang near every component in the rear-end and the clunk is still there. GM diff. lube? Tried it; does not work for this problem.

I chased a weird clunk in the rear of my C4 for about a year before finally finding it. Turned out to be one of the end link rubber bushings on the right end of the rear sway bar was going bad. If I remember correctly I couldn't see the bushing with the r/r wheel off because it's hidden from view by the connecting bracket. mine got bad enough that it finally took out the link... then I was able to find the problem.

good luck

lone73,

Do you remember under what conditions the clunk was produced?

Sometimes when going over a speed bump - at just the right speed -
Sometimes when turning into a driveway or around a corner that also has a slight dip or bump to it.

The frustrating thing about my situation was that it would only do it once in a blue moon and I jacked up the rear several times and took off both rear wheels, crawled under it looking for loose parts and of course never found the culprit. I would also have my wife lay in the rear while I went over some bumps to see if she could isolate which side of the car it was emanating from... no luck.

It wasn't until it got really bad that I was finally able to isolate it. I'm guessing I drove about 10K ~15K miles from when I first noticed it to when I found and fixed the problem.

I had a similar sound on my 94 with 70K. Turned out to be the right rear wheel bearing was shot. Jacked up the car and grabbed the wheel at 12 and 6 and it had about 3" of play. New wheel bearing fixed the noise.
