I put the clutch in, pedal down, and I get this grinding noise. I let the clutch pedal up and the noise stops. If I move the stick to 1st or 2nd the noise gets worse (louder) but when I come off of the clutch & start to move the car the noise goes away.

I know I broke something. I just don't know what it could be. Pilot or release bearing or both or something worse?

Any input, opinions or help would be great, thanks. Oh, I don't launch the car, no power shifting, no dumping of the clutch, not by me anyway. The first owner I can't say. Although the rear tires were worn twice as much as the fronts when I got the car.

Thanks for any help.
Tom
The car only has 13,500 miles. I put 4300 miles on it; orig owner put on 9200. Mostly hiway milage from me.

Throwout brearing. Grinds when you push in the clutch, and stops when you let it out. Throwout bearing.

Your going to have to drop the tranny to put a new one in, but it's pretty simple to do.

Thank you for your help Pete!

I was thinking along that line, but this is my 1st C4 so I'm kind of intimidated by how different things are from my last vette, a 72. Like apples & oranges to me so far.

Tom,

There are more knowledgeable people in the C4 area.
That's for sure.
Perhaps they will give you a step by step instruction on how to do it with the minimum of effort. I just thought I would get the ball rolling by giving you a prompt response to your question. Happy to help!

That's what I like about this club, er site! Someone is always willing to chip in some help! I wish I could do it myself but no place to work. My vette is in a rented space & they don't allow any wrenching. I just figured if I could get some input from fellow C4 owners & ZR-1 owners so I might be more on the ball when I go look for a shop I'd be better able to separate the BS'ers from the good shops.

Thanks again Pete!

Just thought I would update this as it might be useful as far as a FYI resourse.

I'm new to a hydrulically assisted clutch sys. The local chevy dealer says the only problem they could find is a leak from the clutch master cylinder from the back where the push rod goes. The tech said the leak was so slight that it didn't come thru to the interrior of the car, as is uasually the case. The tech & I couldn't make the car duplicate the noise when we went for a diagnostic ride, ain't that my luck! The tech said it is not uncommon for a very slight leak to do what I experienced; a one time symptom after enthusiastic driving thru twisties with a lot of gear changes. He said that the leak allowed air into the system and yielding not enough push on the slave to fully dis-engage the T.O. bearing. He further said after I put the car away for a week before moving it to the dealer the air naturally blead out and the noise was not to be heard because the leak was not big enough to air up the system right away or cause a significant fluid loss. The fluid level was the first thing I checked when I heard the noise & it was between the two lines so I didn't know what to think.

I don't know what to take from this in the way of preventative information. I guess it's a one in a million thing that happened to me. The tech said the M/C's usually leak in a big way & he took mine off after checking the usual places for fluid leaks.

Tom,

Good to hear things are ok, now go drive the wheels off it :D
