Noise in 2000 6 speed

I just bought a 2000 6 speed rag top. When the clutch is out, there is a whirling noise, sounds like thin metal vibrating against another piece of thin metal. I think it sounds like a throw out bearing. When I push the clutch in the noise stops, only to return when the clutch is let back out. The noise is also audable throuought most of the gears. It shounds like it is coming from the front under the hood. I took it back to the dealer who told me they took the clutch and transmission apart and found nothing. Then he told me that this noise is normal for the car. Any input or advice is requested.

Throw Out Bearing

Normal, not to worry, just sometimes embarrasing to have a 60K car make that kind of noise, think some GM engineer could solve such a condition that has obviously been around for a while. On mine it is sometimes not so noticeable and other times it's very noticeable and plain annoying.:r

Thank you, it is quite a relief to hear that the awfull noise is normal.

We recently purchased a 2003 Anniversary Edition Convertible, 6 speed and have the same problem with the noises. After purchasing the vehicle we were told by GM the noises are inherent in the Vette. We got our hands on a copy of an internal memo from GM stating this. Like another post said, though, kind of embarrasing to drive a $60,000 vehicle that rattles and ticks!!! Not acceptable in my opinion.

We are currently working with a lawyer and considering a class action lawsuit against GM and the dealership that sold to us. Please contact us if you or anyone else you know with this problem is interested in pursuing with us.

Thanks.

Class Action Lawsuit

I would be prone to join if it eliminates the noise, if all it does is costs money, gets me a little money back in return and I still have the noise then it solves nothing.:o

Is this the same truck transmission that I have hooked to my LT-4? You'll get used to it.;shrug

C4 and C5 6-sp transmissions are totally different. However, they are designed to similar specifications to torque loads, etc. They produce similar noises. If you find someone that has replace their dual-mass flywheel with a single-mass one, they'll have even more noise. GM did take steps to minimize the noise. One reason the clutch replacement is so expensive in the Vette.

As for class action - I will not participate.

I have a '97 Coupe with the 6-speed trans and yes; the slight "grinding" noise is a natural sound that the transmission makes. In fact, in a friends '99 owner’s manual video, it makes a point of illustrating the noise and proclaims that it's a natural sound, inherent in the 6-speed transmission.

Mine doesn't make this noise in any other gear besides first gear. I also notice that the noise goes away when I give it a little throttle.

I find that if I rev above 1k and keep it around 1k to 1.2k while engaging there is no noise. If I let the clutch out below 1k to the point where it almost bogs a little, I get alot of noise. This is only in 1st. I usually shift between 2.5 and 3.0k during normal driving.

I have a 2000 with the same noise, but it is more noticable when turning and letting the clutch out. I thought it might be the limited slip interacting somehow becuase I also noticed that if I made a really sharp turn and let the clutch out really slowly at low rev's I could feel the limited slip engage and disengage slightly and the noise changed with it. Am I just imagining this?
