Non-OEM tires and the tire sensors

I just bought a 2000 C5. The previous owner installed non-run-flat, Kumho tires. My tire pressure readings seem to come and go, especially when the tires are cold. The local Chevrolet dealer wants to replace one of the sensors at a cost of $216, but Im wondering if this is not normal due to using aftermarket tires. Am I right?

I believe I saw a service bulletin somewhere about the use of non OEM tires causing intermittant pressure reading, or none at all.

It is directly related to the "Faraday Cage" effect caused by steel belting inside the tire: the steel "cage" traps the radio signal and prevents it from ever getting to the dash receiver.

What would replacing one sensor accomplish? You have four tires, four sensors. It's my guess that its the fact that your tires aren't Goodyear EMTs.

C4C5Specialist, please confirm, thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Thats about what I expected. To make the situation even worse, when I first took the car in to be checked, it was the LF not reading. When they checked it, they said, "Oh, we need to replace the RF." I explained the RF seemed to be OK, but they insisted it wasnt. In the last couple of days 3 of the 4 have been reading intermittently, so I would say you're 100% correct. Glad I decided to get a 2nd opinion!

I agree that the tires are the most likely cause. I know for fact that that there was a tech bulletin on the subject. Your dealer should have done their homework. I would chalange them on their recomendation.

HI there,
There is a simple way to confirm.
Attempt to program the sensors, when the vehicle most likely does NOT get a reading, hot or cold.
If they all read, the tires are not the issue.
