Wow: 138,000? I though I was doing good wih 118,000 on my '99. Of course, living in CA, you don't put up with al the winderful weather we have here in the winter. I do drive it all winter, and you'd be surprised how good it is in less than ideal conditions. Is there anything a long mileage guy like me can learn from a fellow long mileage guy? Anything to watch for in the next 20,000?
Hi justacar,
Sorry I took so long to reply. (I've been busy selling a house)
I got this car in Feb of 2000 with 222 miles on it, so the now 140,000mi is for the last 3 and ½ years.
I let the Display tell me when to change the oil, (It ends up being 6 – 8000 mi).
I replaced the break pads and turned the rotors at 100,000.
I changed all the other fluids around 110,000. (Diff, Trans, Coolant).
When it started getting hot out here it was running a lot hotter than I comfortable with so I took the top of the radiator shroud off and hosed out all the crap off the radiator, and then got up in the front with a “L type” of. …Well if you go to home depot in the garden department there is this fitting that goes on the hose with an L and a head. It’s for watering plants. Lots of flow with not too much pressure. I rinsed the A/C condenser with this. The temps are back down to where I like it. Low 170’s to mid 180’s in the morning. High 180’s to low 200’s in the heat of the day.
I’d like to say more on what to expect but to be honest I start it up in the morning, jump up on the freeway (about 1.5 miles from my house) drive the 97 miles to work. Then when I get off I drive it the 108 miles back home (I pick up my son). In other words it’s almost exclusively highway miles.
This car made maybe 35 or 40 passes at Sac raceway. (Best was 13.0/110 mph), and several sessions at the Thunder hill road course in it’s earlier days. It is of course now retired from such activities since it is getting a bit long in the tooth.
I still make it to some of the f-body/LS1 cruses a local car club has and it holds it’s own when we get to some of the “out in the boonies” twisties.
The bottom line is to wash it every weekend keep up the normal maintenance and enjoy.
And !Don’t forget to wave! , We C5’ers are getting a bad rep for ignoring the more senior Corvettes and drivers.
I’ve even noticed a lot of C5 drivers that don’t or won’t wave at me. ??? What’s up with those a-holes?
