Where exactly are the matching numbers located on the differential? And what about the transmission? Just in case one was to try to match numbers and see if it's stock.
Some of these may differ with certain years, also on an 81 I believe there is another stamp on the front area close to the front pinion yoke, it's been a while since I looked.
For '63-'79, the differential date and ratio codes are stamped into the machined surface on the bottom of the carrier, just forward of where the rear spring retaining plate bolts to the bottom of the carrier - usually have to brush/scrape off the accumulated crud to see them.
Thanks, John. Is it pretty hard to see the numbers on the diff and tranny if you are just looking under the car (jacked up, I guess) to see if numbers match?
Okay, I figured it would be a problem to look at them. We were going to check the numbers to see if they were matching, but that sounds like a lot of work.
If I remember correctly, the VIN derivitive on manual transmissions is stamped on the passengers side mounting flange. On automatic trans cars, there isn't a VIN derivitive, but there is a metal tag riveted to the passengers side of the trans. That tag has a "Julian" date and a code, which tells it's application and assembly date. Chuck
Thanks for the input, guys. It turns out that we bought the Vette! 78 Silver Anniversary. It's beautiful. The thread's in the Lounge if you want to see a picture.
