I was looking for a diagnostic tool for my '84 and came across the OBD-I Auto Xray. It's about $150-$200 depending on where you get it. Does anyone have experience with this or other diagnostic tools? I want to know if it's worth the money or if there is something equally good or even better than I should go with.
Chris (69MyWay) had me sold on the Actron brand Scantool, I even had it here in my hands, but I had to return it unopened because it was no longer needed since I switched engine management systems.
Chris, or somebody, will chime in here soon with their recommendations, hang in there.
I have the auto xray scanner and have been very happy with it. I don't think you will find anything better for the money. I had it upgraded to obdII and they were very helpfull. each unit is preprogrammed with all aplications but upgrades are only accessable with a password and of course you need the appropriate cables which they mail out. It also has online upgrades if you get pclink, which also downloads your scans to your computer. It has proved to be very helpfull on several occasions. beats taking it in and paying someone else to do it. Summit has the obdI for $175 you may find it cheaper looking around. check with autoxray.com for other dealers.

I got my Auto-Xray 3500 from http:www.autotestsys.com for less $ than I could directly from Auto-Xray. Haven't used it on the 94 coupe yet, but did use it on my daughter's 2002 Dodge Ram that had set the CHK ENG light. It came out in plain english and said that the transmission fluid pressure sw reading was too high. She had started the truck in -10F weather and took right off. Tranny fliud had to be heavy! When I bought the scanner I also got the PC Link and what I plan on doing is to capture data on the 94 at an idle (the Vette is running like a top), then down-load the data tomy desktop to give me baseline on its parmeters. If I do have problems later I have something to compare with. :cool Check out the websit..Regards, Frank
It is only going to cost you $5 in Radio Shack parts if you have access to a laptop running Windows. You could use a stationary PC too if you get it close enough to the car.
You can do a lot more with WinALDL than with any of the $$$ handheld scanners.
