obdII scanners again?

I did a search here, but didn't come up with much. I'm looking at code scanners and just don't know what to get. I see hand held code readers like they have at Auto Zone, laptop programs for code and more sophisticated diagnostics, and even a website that gives you about everything you might want(OBDCOM Diagnostic Systems for ALL vehicles. Theres so many out there its a bit overwelming. Any real world advice would be much appreaciated. I think I want more than just a scanner. I can go down the block to the parts store for a simple code read when i get a service engine light.

I use Autotap.com, had it for years now and it works just great. I think it's around $200.00 for the software and the connector for notebook. Works with win7 also which I like and the updates are free. Great graph, gauges and record modes. Learning curve...fairly easy. 32 bit or 64 bit OS.

I purchased a connector and program for my laptop from Scantool.net called OBDlink SX. Does everything I wanted and more. Under 50 bucks. It pulled some old codes, told me what they were in plain english and cleared them for me.
