A friend of mine has a 71 small block coupe. The odometer and trip does not work. I saw a post from a few years ago, that says basically the gauge will need to be rebuilt. I was wondering however if there was another way of checking this. Where does the drive end of the cable come from? If it is something external from the gauge cluster, I will probably help him fix, otherwise he might let it go for a while, as he is mainly doing repairs!

Well, since he probably does not have cruise control on this car, you need to check if the cable is good. You can pull the transmission end and spin it with a drill or just spin it by hand a little to see if the speedo moves. If this doesn't work it might be the other end has bit the dust. You have to disconnect the cable and look there, now that is a bit@h of a job. If it is good and the transmission gear is good, then it is in the speedo head, and will need rebuilt. There are companies that do that, I think ZIP PRODUCTS has that availble. GOOD LUCK!!!

The speedometer works, so does that mean it is in the gauge head? Does the same cable drive the speedometer as well as odometer and trip?

Thanks for the input.

Check it...Prior Thread

I would almost go so far as to say that John @ RedLine Gauges is the unofficial go-to guy for CAC'ers. :thumb
Myself and plenty other will vouch for him.
