Odometer...want to start new

I called the FL DMV and confirmed that it is okay to reset the odometer back to zero. As Chris said, if we sell the car, we must indicate that the odometer doesn't reflect the proper mileage.

The DMV realizes that the older cars with only 5 digit odometers may already have rolled over once and wouldn't reflect the correct mileage anyway. As in our case, the odometer had been broken for quite a while and we are replacing it with one out of a different car.

In reality, we are being more honest because the odometer will now reflect the actual miles put on the car since it was completely rebuilt.

As advised, I spoke with John at redline gauges. He is a very helpful person. John walked me through the process of resetting the odometer, but during the discussion, we determined that the trip odometer was missing a gear and not working. So, I am sending it off to John on Monday and he is going to fix it up for me.

I didn't really want to pull the dash out again to reset the odometer, but now I'm glad I did beacause I really want the trip odometer to work.

Earlier today, before I pulled the dash out, I hooked up the battery and bravely turned on the power for the first time since completely rewiring the car. No smoke! :_rock

We have headlights and Chris's electric actuators work great. The heater blower works as does everything else we could test. And the new CD/mp3 player sounds great!!!! Now if we just had that motor back from the engine builder. Soon....it will have life.

Here's DMV's take on the odometer

If the cars OLDER then 10 years...nobody cares! At that point in time.. they do not log the milage.. EXCEPT for the release of liability..

So you sell the car with 10- 100- 100,000 miles.. and the guy gets in an accident 15 miles later..bada bing! YOUR OFF THE HOOK!

Now they WILL record the info..but only if you ask em to!

How's that for your tax dollars hard @ work!

I don't think John is a member of this site. John is at Red Line Gauge and Clock Repair. We sent John our odometer and he repaired the trip odometer, set the odometer back to zero and basically checked the whole thing over for us.

It looks like Red Line specializes in GM repairs. His website is http://www.redlineg.com

This is the first time we've dealt with Red Line, but I'd recommend John highly. We overnighted the odometer to him and had it back within a week and the price was very reasonable.

Now we have our dash back together and everything is set to zero waiting for the new motor.

Did you just have the odometer reset or rebuilt???
Did you have speedometer problems as well???
What was your cost w/ shipping???

Thanks

I think it would be neat to set it back to zero.
:eek :nono Call your Dept. Of Motor Vehicles before you do anything like that. Yes you do have to have intent when breaking laws, sometime you can get into a trick bag and not know it.......Better to be safe than sorry.......The Lawman Has Spoken.........

First of all...we did check with the Florida DMV, which is the state we live in, and they said it was okay as previously posted. Other states/circumstances may be different. No matter what, our odometer did not reflect the actual mileage on the car.

Our trip odometer was missing a gear, therefore not working. John, at Red Line, replaced the missing parts for us. We only sent him the odometer without the speedometer/face plate. Our speedometer seems to work fine.

The one originally in our car was broken and we pulled this one out of a donor car not realizing the trip odometer didn't work. I guess we won't really know if it all works properly until we get the motor in the car and try it out. Maybe John could have fixed the old one, but we didn't know about Red Line at the time.

Cost including shipping was just under $40.
