As none of these manuals really tell me anything useful I once again turn to the forums... after a search nothing so now I get to ask

Whats everyone running as far as oil goes (weight, brand, etc)

Also plugs are nice, any recommendations, any warnings

Bill

Bill,

You are in fairly mild summer climate. No need to run any thicker than 10W30 on your engine in the summer, and maybe even 5W30 in the winter/cooler months. The thinner the oil the quicker it gets to work on cold days.

Plugs wise, I prefer A/C delco in all G.M. applications except for extreme duty engines where I will then go Bosch or NGK.

I would think a good solid A/C delco replacement would be perfect for your car. If you are having any trouble fouling plugs due to worn valve guides, etc. it won't hurt to spend the extra bucks on a rapid fire. It also won't net you more power, just give you a more reliable spark longer in situations where it might otherwise be compromised.

Oil brand? I like Mobile, Kendall, and Valvoline. Why? I don't know. Sometimes I just like the way the bottles are shaped and colored. Valvoline has some nice easy pour bottles right now that are easy to use.

I installed a new GM Goodwrench engine. I use Red-Line 5w-30 synthetic oil and AC Delco plugs. I used the other spark plugs years ago. There is no difference in performance. I recently read in a article that the Red- Line oil showed a 8hp/12ftlbs increase over other oils (dyno).

I hate to start any controversy. I really dont want to. I think redline is a good oil for racing in engine that see frequent oil changes. But I still believe that the pre mentioned oils are really a better choice for the everyday stop and go driving. I use Vavoline in my everyday drivers (10w30) and Mobile one in my Vette also 10w30.

Thanks guys,

My sharks previous owner had been running 20w40 in it, didnt mention a brand but I thought it might be a bit thick for an older engine.

Plugs were Bosch Platinum, again not happy with the choice (always had detination problems).

So I was trying to figure out which way to go, I'm pretty sure synthetic is out of the question a nice hybrid perhaps, weight is tricky as is viscosity but your input helps narrow the choice.

Plugs still up in the air, just not Bosch, splitfires might be in order

My .02.....
If you don't know what type of oil has been used pick a good name brand like maxrevs85 has said. I use GTX 10-30 but I am also in a warm climate 103 degrees today :mad
The only warning I have is don't use synthetic on and older motor because the oil is so good at getting into places that the standard oil won't it will create oil leaks in areas where you didn't have leaks before. I guess it is kind of a Good news/ Bad news.
FYI...I got this info from my son who is the Swift Chassis rep for the Toyota Atlantic series.

Pennzoil & 1 quart or Shalers rislone
Every 3,000 miles, MAX!
AC DELCO everything! gary.

When I purchased my vette, it was kinda foamy looking under the filler cap and looked dingy through the valve cover opening for the filler cap, but after about three oil changes with mobile one it looks clean as a whistle. Maybe the previous owner just didnt change the oil that much, but whatever the reason, I'm stuck on mobile one from now on. All I've ever used was delco spark plugs, so thats all I know about, but I'm well pleased with them.
