Hi

l just made an appt to bring my 96 in for an oil change, check all fluids and lubricate what has to be done.

Being that l just picked up my 96 with 44,000miles, l would feel better if a dealer handled it, or am l wrong?

The dealer wants $50 to change the oil, it seems high or is it more expensive to do on a 96.

What do you suggest that l have checked while l have the oil done. The back of the front hood, where it lathches looks like there isn't any lubricant there, should there be.

Thanks.

p.s. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the expense comes from mobil synthetic oil. Buy your own oil at a discount Costco or Sams and buy the filter and do it yourself. It's not that hard.

Just be careful not ot overfill.

To give you an idea, the dealership charges me 80 bucks for oil changes.

I get hit for about $70.00 at the dealer.:eek :eek :eek

Some places will let you bring your own Mobil1 Oil & Filter and just charge you a "flat fee" for labor.

That's what I do

9.95 for labor
40 bucks in oil
4 bucks for a filter

54 bucks for an oil change

Mobil!!!!!!!

So what you are telling me that mobil synthetic oil and mobil filter is the way to go.

Mobil is what your car came with from the factory.

As far as the filter, I use the stock GM style filter. Use what you think is best for your car.

$50 is not bad if they are using Mobil 1. Make sure they use Mobile 1. Guy

Yea, $50 is a deal for Mobil 1....the dealer here charges $65.
It's not a bad idea at all to take it in for the first time...they should check and top off all fluids and do a lube also.
After that, heck yea, do it yourself if you have a place to do it.
I do, however, like the K&N oil filter over the stock filter. It's so much easier to remove and install since it has a formed/ built-in 1"
nut on the bottom of the filter.

You forgot to mention your engine takes like 900 qts of oil. That's why it's allot of $$$.:L :w

Ask the dealer if you can provide your own Mobil-1 5w-30 oil. You will need to bring 5 quarts. Ask them to use an AC Delco filter. Most dealerships should allow you to bring your own Mobil-1. My dealer wants $7.95 a quart for it and they don't charge me any extra for bringing my own.

While I do most of my own oil changes, the winter months are usually when I will take my 92 to the dealer. They are extra careful with Corvettes and they keep them under cover before and after service work.

Point out to the service writer exactly what you want to have greased. Hood latches, door hinges and such. The owner's manual will have information on what is to be lubed at different mileage intervals. If you don't have any of the prior service records, you should consider having the differential oil replaced and make sure they add the special posi lube to the re-fill.

If you have an automatic tranny, you might want to consider a filter change and maybe even a complete flush. Brake fluid flush would be another item to consider, too.

44,000 Mile check up!!

l will lube everything that moves and check every fluid level. As far as the auto tranny, l will change the filter if it's reasonable and the oil.

How about the rear end???????????

Boy l love haw you like to spend my money, only kidding.

I change my own and save $$$$

I buy Mobil1 at Wall-mart, and sometimes they have a 5 quart jug on sale for $17.88. that plus $3.00 for a filter makes it a total of about $21....leaves me lots of $$$ for other Vette stuff.

I always do my own changes, because I used to work in a garage and I know what some folks do to other people's cars...especially the high performance jobs like our Vettes.

Wal-Mart Oil Change?????

Boy do have nerve going to a local Wal-Mart, were you able to watch??

Love the price.

Oh what do you call a service.

Walmart

Yes, i too am learly of Wal Mart.

Shopping there is not problem.
Service there is a joke here in Ocean Springs, MS.

Stopped in a month or so back to get a tire balance job. (a Monday) 2 hrs later they finally put my SUV in the bay and then 30 min later tell me they cant work on me till I replace 3 tires.

Took my truck down to local Goodyear shop. 30 min later said my tires were fine and that I had one tire out of balance and there was no charge. (because I was buds with one of the mgr's buds)
gotta love the south!

I get mine at Costco for $20 a case(6qts)

I have a couple of diesel N14 Cummins at work that I use synthetic in ..how about 11 gallons per oil change:cry

Just for the sake of argument... the techs at Walmart and a CHEVY dealership are no more or less qualified to work on your car.
You might pay significantly more at the dealership but the grunts still do the work.
I have never seen a MASTER certified ASE tech do oil changes.
And I have worked at a dealership and I see what goes on.

The only way to make sure the job is done right, is to do it yourself.
