As a new owner of used '98 vette, I want to do as much work as I can myself. I have always changed my own oil as long as I have been working on cars so I will do it on this one. One thing I read in the owners manual was that there is a "special procedure" to be perfromed during the oil change that you should consult the dealer for information or the tech manual. Is it just the resetting of the DIC or is is something else?

Yes it is something else. The car has to be LEVEL during entire procedure.Allow 7 minutes for the engine oil to fully drain.Reinstall drain plug and tighten to
(18 lb ft) Allow 3 minutes for fresh (Mobil1 5/30) to fully fill oil pan.
It is a big hassel especially raising the car.Somewere in a past forum you can read about many inovative ways guys change oil.
One thing you need is the 3 part Corvette Service Manuel. It has paid for it self over and over.
Good luck with your vette

I don't blame you for wanting to do it yourself; especially since we have "Dealer dropped my C5 off a lift" thread going. :cry

Well,
When I changed my oil I just did it like I do on all my cars. I didn't have any problems. (jack it up on the driver's side just enough to get under it, drain it, change the filter (fill it up too), reinstall the plug, drop the car down, and fill it.)

Maybe not every drop came out, but I think most of it did since it took a little over 6 quarts to fill it.

Check that radiator too!

Just changed mine before the "X-files" trip. Luckily my driveway falls away from the garage. Rhino ramps in front of the tires and by the time I'm on 'em, the car is level. I like using the K & N filter. For some reason it makes my oil pressure read about 10 lbs higher (I think the stock pressure looks low). Be sure to check above the air dam on the front. Every time I change oil (only twice so far) I remove a ton of junk from up in there....plastic bags, big chunks of white foam, limbs...so on....stuff just flies up in there and sticks against the radiator.

George :cool

Thanks for your responses, will be changing oil this weekend based on the information. This is a great forum!

Step 3 is very important

SERVICE INFORMATION

LS1 OIL CHANGE

  1. Vehicle must be level. (VERY IMPORTANT.) The butterfly oil pan must be level for all the oil to drain.
  2. Allow a MINIMUM OF 7 MINUTES for the oil to drain fully after the oil filter and oil drain plug have been removed. There are oil galleries in the LS1 that need time to drain fully.
  3. Allow a MINIMUM OF 3 MINUTES for the new oil to fully fill the engine oil pan before starting the engine.

How much oil do you guys think gets trapped in the back of the oil pan if you simply drive it up on Rhino ramps but don't raise the back? Has anyone measured how much extra comes out when they lift up the rear of the car?

On my first oil change with this car I simply poured one full quart of fresh oil into the engine while the drain plug was still off. I figure this is probably enough to help push out most of the oil that might have gotten trapped in the back of the pan.

His driveway was slanted so when he ran up on the rhino ramps the car WAS level...

Jack it up ,take out the drain plug and filter, let it down for 10mins., jackit up again and replace drain and filter.

Since the drain plug is located in the front of the pan, I think it IS important that the rear of the car be slightly higher than the front.

On the 2004 Corvette the oil drain plug is NOT located on the front of the pan...it is located on the passenger side of the pan...:)

Hmmm......I must have gotten one of those oddball pans, then. Drains right on to the crossmember directly in front of it when I first pull the plug, as designed...:D :)
