Oil consumption issues?

I just got my issue of Corvette Magazine and they mentioned something about the LS1 and LS2 motors having a faulty ring in cylinder number 2.

Have any of the folks had that issue here?

Was it a recall issue?

HI there,
There is nothing in the GM database on this. Not even a PI service document.
Good question, considering that the LS1 and LS2 are different generations.

Oops, I meant to say LS6.

Edmond, check out this TSB and see if that sounds like what you're talking about.

Part of the correction is:
A new set of piston rings is currently available through GMSPO. The new rings are part of a complete piston ring kit. Install only the number 2 compression ring and the oil expander ring from the piston ring kit. All other rings in the piston ring kit should be discarded. The original number 1 compression ring and the oil ring rails should be re-used in their original positions on the piston. All pistons should be used in the same cylinder bore.

Based on the correction, it sounds like #2 ring might be an issue. I don't think there was a recall- it seemed to be sporadic. Some people had the problem, and some didn't.

Tammy,

That's exactly what I was talking about. Thanks for the link.

From my issue of Corvette Magazine, they said that 1 quart of consumption per 3000 miles could be classified as normal.

I'm looking into jumping onto a C5 later this year and after reading the article in Corvette Magazine, where they took the whole engine out to repair the problem, I want to be sure that it's not an issue I'll have to deal with.

Anyone here have this issue repaired or unrepaired?

never had a problem with my 2001 Z06

HI there,
GM classifies normal oil consumption as 1 quart for every 2000 miles driven.
Now, if you have a piston ring concern, you can expect to use at 1 quart in under 1000 miles.
The bulletin is a Ms S stated, and when this is done, you can expect the normal usage if your technician is doing the job per GM guidelines.
On some, you will have to replace the valley cover in between the heads, because this also had some problems.

C4C5,

Is that 1 quart for every 2000 miles consumption rule applied to C5's only?
