I was running my 86 on the highway today at 120kph (approx. 75 mph) when my "service engine soon" light came on. I noticed the oil temp was at 220+. After pulling over and letting the engine cool awhile. I drove back home a little slower 60 mph at 1700 rpm with the oil temp at 205 and the coolant temp at 191. The service light stayed out. Was it the high oil temp that triggered the service light and how do I avoid this. (Oil was changed less than 100 miles ago)

Get the code pulled. Auto Zone does it for free. Could be an EGR problem. Mine does the same thing when cruising at steady speed for awhile.(App 6 to 8 miles) Its a code 32 for mine,EGR crap. I replaced the egr solenoid, and temp. switch. Still comes on only when cruising steady speeds though. Probably the egr valve though. It goes out after I shut the car off, but then comes on again at cruise speeds. I can drive around and vary my speed and it will not come on. I will get the egr valve changed some day soon.

I've been doing alot of searching in past threads about code 32's. They seem to be pretty common. I'm going to try jumping A&B on the diagnostics today to make sure that's the code that comes up. Should I look at replacing the EGR or just ignore it. What damage (if any) is being done when that code is showing up?

I am just ignoring it for now. If you have a couple hundred bucks to have a $51 part replaced, go ahead and have it done. The plenum must be taken off to get to the egr valve itself. I have narrowed down my problem to this. In other threads, they talk about other possibilities. The c4c5 specialist is a great guy to ask questions. He was very helpful to me in pin pointing my problem. The only effect you might have by getting that code is maybe less gas mileage. I never noticed a change yet. The SES light bugs me quite a bit, but as long as your coolant temp is good and your oil pressure is good, don't worry. Car will run just fine. This is a weird thing in regards to the egr problem. I took the vette up to about 90mph for a couple of miles, and the thing light went out and didn't come again that day. Who knows? Egr stuff is a pain. Who knows if I replace the egr valve, the light might still come on. Good Luck!

Thaks Yarls24, Nice to know I'm not the only one up early Sunday morning mulling over vette problems!!!

Not in California anymore! BAR prohibited them from doing that here because they aren't a garage and don't charge for the service. I guess someone thought they were taking the food from someone else's table.

In one way it kinda makes sense; there are a lot of people that would use the results from the Autozone scanner, buy a part and take it to their mechanic and expect them to install it and solve the problem. However, there may be more to it than just the one sensor or one piece of equipment, and if the mechanic's install of the customer's part didn't fix the problem, the customer is angry with his mechanic.

Just keep in mind that retreiving a code may not be an end in itself. Other parts of the system may need to be checked as well. ;)
