Any problems with the original type?
Is the new style better or easier?

thanks

Hey ! A fresh topic ! I had a cartridge on my old 66 396 engine . It worked well enough but you had to make sure to get the old gasket out of the groove , makeing sure not to double up on them . That was a sure way to make it leak . The cartridge type is a little messy . One other thing , make sure to hold the cartridge still while tightning the bolt , so as not to cut into that rubber gasket . Cliff

I liked the old style (can, element and bolt) better. You didn't have to worry about another bypass valve failing, or the thin metal case bursting and loosing your oil, and it contained more "filtration area". And yes, you can pre-fill the old style, I did it for many years.

I prefer the large canister, which is easy to fill with oil before installing - preventing engine damage waiting for the filter to fill with oil when the engine is started.

It is also cheaper and available at oil change shops coast to coast when you are on the road - instead of on the trailer. Some of my trips exceed 4-5000 miles.
