oil leak on an 81

i have a very slight oil leak ...just a small spot on the garage floor..I have been told that a little bit of leakage is normal...is that true? the car has 92,000 miles and has not had the oil changed recently (also, the car is driven only once or twice a week)

My personal point of view on this is NO! Your mechanic and I do not see eye to eye on this..

My '81 has no leaks! The last leak was the passager side valve cover gasget. I don't drive mine as much as you do and I check for leaks everytime I move her out of the garage.

When I bought her everything leaked :eek Engine, Transmission (4-speed) and Rear End.. Now there are No leaks, drips or errors Required new gasgets everywhere, but it has been 4 years now and still no leaks.

Your car shouldn't have any leaks. I have had a problem with my '81 with oil leaking and have had the valve cover gaskets worked on a few different times. They can be very tricky because if you over torque them, the cork gets too compressed and then over time, they loosen up and leaks re-appear. Under torque and you have the same problem, only sooner. I am now fanatical about leaking and look everytime I pull out. It's been dry for awhile, so based on my experience, I recommend getting those gaskets looked at.

If it is your valve cover gaskets Fel-pro makes a valve cover gasket that will end that problem for good. It is a part #VS12869T. They cost more than regular ones but they will stop the leak if it is your valve covers. Make sure all of your sufaces are good and don't over tighten them.....I traded my 81 just last August for an 86 C4 conv. I miss her....Bob Yates (Mr. Badwrench)
