In my effort to stop leaks (today I changed the rear transmission seal) I want to drop my oil pan and replace the gasket on my 69 350/350. Does anyone have recommendations for a replacement gasket? I'm wondering if there are 1 piece gaskets available, as opposed to the 4 piece gaskets that were common on some of the older Chevy engines. Thanks for any info.

Felpro makes good gaskets http://www.fel-progaskets.com/ you can usually buy them in any parts store...Mr Gasket is good also http://www.mrgasket.com/ I use the 4 piece, just clean the block with brake cleaner, put a coat of RTV on the gasket and stick it up on the block...install pan. May I make a suggestion while you have the pan down...replace the rear main seal...all you need to do is take the oil pump down and remove the cap...the seal is a 2 parter...easy to change and where alot of leaks happen.

Felpro offers a complete suround gasket. OS34510R. Your best bet. Never use silicone on anything. That junk can get loose and go to your oil pickup F-ing up everything. :upthumbs

Rear Seal

Thanks for the prompt input. I think I'll try the 1 piece gasket. This is a vehicle I recently purchased that pretty much sat for the past 15 years. As I've been driving it, the old gaskets and seals are giving up the ghost. It does look like the rear main seal is also leaking. But I hadn't yet looked into what would be involved in changing it. I will try to do both at the same time. I can see the power steering ram is also seeping a little, but I haven't even looked into that yet. One leak at a time...

Upper rear seal

I've looked at JonM's suggestion of replacing the upper rear seal as well. I want to get a good feel for what will be involved. I understand I will have to drop the pan and remove the oil pump. But I'm wondering if I will also have to loosen the crankshaft, etc.? Any info or tips is appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you!

That's great info. I really appreciate your extra effort. Hopefully as I take more and more of this car apart and put it back together, I'll be able to be as helpful as everyone has been to me.

Rear Main Seal gasket- 1 or 2 lips?

Whic Felpro seal # do I want? I see they have 1 lip and 2 lip gaskets available. Thanks.

Oil pan gasket

Also can someone confirm the Felpro 1 piece oil pan gasket #-- I didn't have luck with OS34510R. Maybe it's OS34510T? I'd like to make sure I have all the correct parts when I start the job-- thanks.

It depends which oil pan you have. If you have the original '69 oil pan (which takes a "thin" front seal), you need #OS-34509-T; if you have a later GM service replacement oil pan (which takes the "thick" front seal), you need #OS-34510-T.

If you don't know which pan you have, flip it upside down on a flat surface (without a gasket on it) and measure straight up to the radius of the front seal surface; if it measures 2-1/4", it takes the 509 gasket with the "thin" front seal. If it measures 2-3/8", it takes the 510 gasket with the "thick" front seal.

Let the guy at the store tell you which rear main seal you need...I used a Mr Gasket...you can get them at your local speed shop. BTW...it doesn't make the car go any faster...it just so happens that is where they sell Mr Gasket. :)

Thanks

Thanks-- that's exactly the info I needed. My friend has a garage with a car lift, but lives nowhere near a parts store. I think I'll buy both, figure out which one I need as we do the job, and then return the other.
