I own an 1989 vette that has always been serviced with 'regular' oil - Can I use synthetic from April - Dec and then go back to 'regular' oil for storage

Thanks

Chris

I think not, but why would you want to? Cost of oil is minimal, really. 5W-30 sells for $1.50/qt and Mobil 1 for $4.50/qt. 6 qts difference only totals $18.00. Once or twice a year oil change..... not that expensive.

Some people think that switching between synthetic oil and regular oil will cause leaks. I don't know if it's true, but I have heard that. If that is the case, you would probably be better off sticking with the regular motor oil.

I agree. Go with the synthetic and stay there. Your engine will thank you for it.

If you go with synthetic, and stay with synthetic you will be fine, as long as you don't have any leaks right now. I am not sure about switching back, and forth, but I wouldn't do it in my car.

:v ^^^^I agree^^^^

What happens is that the synthetic has a tendancy to clean better then the convential from what I understand. If you have any depsits in your engine the synthetic can break those down and cause a leak.

Other than the aforementioned possibility ("likelihood" in all probability) of leaks, there should be no reason you cannot mix conventional motor oil with synthetic oil; Ford's Motorcraft oil advertises it as being a blend of synthetic and hydrocracked base oils.

But then again
... I wouldn't do it in my car.
;)

I have switched back and forth between regular Mobil oil and Mobil 1 in my old 87 Buick with 320,000 miles. Used Mobil 1 in the winter for better starting. This engine never did use more than a cup full in between 5000 mile oil changes. I gave this car away when the doors started rusting and bought another salt free 87 Buick with 100,000 miles. I am switching back and forth with this one also. Oil consumption is also nil. I don't think it matters.
