What is the proper oil temperature for an 84?
Mine seems to be running about 210-215

That's good!
Nascar mechanics like to see minimum of 220f
It needs to be over 212 to boil off any condensation. any thing over 240 (dino oil) is bad, Synthetic can go to 290 the main thing is that bearing temps are maybe 70 degrees over the delivered oil temp and the bearings melt about 400 and soften at 350. so even though the synthetic will take 445 (flash point for mobil one)
it's not a good idea to run much over 290

Thanks for the info. My water temp guage is not operating properly so I have been watching oil temp and was not sure what it should be.

I am so glad that you asked that question. (about oil temp) I have been kind of paranoid about mine. My coolant temp has been running about 210-220 when in town driving and gets down to about 188 - 190 on the highway. My oil temp was at about 213 then creeped up to 220 at the highest before I got home. It smelled kind of hot, too. Sitting at a stop light, my coolant temp might get up to 235 max and then the fan kicks in and it shoots down pretty fast. The car is new to me, so I am really watching things until I get used to her quirks.

Had my car out in heavy traffic today ( 85 and very humid) and the oil temp climbed to about 225 and pretty much stayed there.

Hey Xtreme, glad to see you're out enjoying that 'Vette!....:upthumbs...it sounds like it's running right where it should. If your not running synthetic, you should consider it.

Yes, on my next oil change, I am going to go synthetic.
I am SOOOOO enjoying my new Vette!:Steer
I had it in the Cruise In at the State Fair on Monday. They had us in a dirt/grass lot outside the fairgrounds and my car has never been so dusty! That's okay. I am not getting the new paint until the end of this month. The clearcoat is peeling on the back and the right rear quarter.
I spent all Saturday stripping the clearcoat off of the wheels and polishing them. They look pretty good! Except I made my first mistake. :bash I let the stripper get on the insert in the middle of the center cap and it damaged the plastic that covers the emblem. Anyone know where to get just the insert for the center caps on the 17" wheels? Buying the whole center cap is expensive!!!! :eek
Thanks for the Carfax. It has really eased my mind.;worship

Yep, you got the fever! Stripping those wheels is a chore! That's too bad about the center cap. I'm sure someone on here can help. No sweat on the carfax...:beer

Oh! but I didn't mention that I took them off the car and polished them - with the tires on - in my living room! ;shrug THAT is having the fever!

;LOL, who needs a garage?? Doesn't the '88 have silver caps? I do have some extra caps, but they're off my '96 and I believe they may be different. They are silver and basically push on the wheel from the outside, like a hub cap. Sound familiar? I'm not sure what the '88 had...

Mine are the flat center cap that is flush on the wheel when you put it on. I have a special tool to lock it on with the special bolt. I have some pictures at home on my computer. I will post them tonite. I have a before pic of the wheel and I can take an after pic too.

Yeah, I just looked it up and it looks like you have caps specific to that year. Is there any way you can remove the coating and then clearcoat? Post the pics!!!!!

Remove which coating? Do you mean the inserts? They are rivits (is that spellec right?) that hold them in, but by the time I realized what would happen, the damage was done. The next time I do this, I will just cover the insert with tape - or something like that - or make sure that what does get on there gets wiped off right away. I used an aerosol paint remover. There is also gels that you could paint on that would prevent the overspray problem.
And when the wind blows just a bit of the stuff on your legs (if you are wearing shorts) when you are spraying, IT BURNS! :nono Actually, it itches more. When I go home for lunch, I can forward the pics to my work so I can post them. I have to get some of my skydiving pics for someone else anyway.

I think I understand now. I was kind of flying blind as I'm not too familiar with that particular cap. The Corvette logo is actually an insert, correct? If that's the case, I would keep my eye out at car shows and Corvette events to see if there's an aftermarket accesorie that uses that particular size. Other than that, I guess you have to bite the bullet and buy a new one. Maybe someone who is also refinishing their wheels will read this and it will save them some aggravation. Hey, just looking at the bright side...:cool

Skydiving? Very cool, but I like to have stuff like wings and engines around me when I'm in the air. Must be one heck of a rush, though.

Here is one before picture. I will take an after pic when I get home from work.

Here is a picture of the good side of my car!

Nice color on your car. I assume the "bad" side has the peeling clearcoat?

It's difficult to get a perspective on the size of the emblem on the cap. It does look just like a fuel door emblem but again, it's hard for me to tell in the pic. I'll be interested to see how the wheels turn out!
