Hi guys, my oil temp hit 240 the other day, the highest I ever seen it, the temp outside was about 85 degrees. Is this normal, or should i be worried. It ussually floats between 200 and 230, but when I saw it hit 240, I got a little worried, thankx

I'm going through this problem now, but then, mine's far from stock too. :L

Your right in that the 240° temperature is starting to get a little high for a stock L-98, but it's not all that bad, especially if you use synthetic oil.

The oil should see at least 220-230° in order to efficiently burn off the contaminants. It's not unusual to see a race engine's oil in the 275-300° range while working hard. Sometimes it even gets higher than that. :eek

You neglected to mention the conditions in which the temperature excursion occurred, and whether or not anything had recently been done that could have exacerbated this condition. ;shrug

thats good to know. My L98 isnt stock either, it has a cam and heads on it, and all the little mods too, i just needed to know that it wasnt getting to a critical heat and start damaging my engine. Thanks for your help, do you know at what point i should start to have to worry, just incase....

High outside ambient air temps may cause a slightrise in oil temps but 240 should not be a big issue if it just pops up there and goes back in a short time. Does your car have the RPO KC4 oil cooler option?? Z51 cars had them and I think it was even possible to get teh cooler with some other options like a HD radiator.

If you don't have a oil cooler, you might consider adding one. Besides the OEM cooler, you should be able to find aftermarket oil cooler setups that will help keep the temps down. Don't go too big as you do want to keep the oil temp in a range that will cook off any moisture or contaminants. Also going to a synthetic oil like Mobil-1 will be a big help.
