I just purchased my first Vette...1986. No history at all on the car, but it seem sto have MANY electrical issues (windshield wipers turn on...but not off, etc.)

I have a question about the oil temp... what is a "normal" range?

Mine is running about 215... and my coolant temp surges fast whenever I'm stopped...

Thanks!

That is about normal. Oil temp should range up to about 225. Don't run the engine up to high rpm until the oil temp is to at a bare minimum of about 185.

Enjoy,

Yes... it starts around 195 but jumps into the 220 + range within 45 seconds of stopping at a light... The oil temp seems to jump quickly as well. Watching the guages makes me nervous!

I appreciate the input received from everyone... makes me feel a little less ignorant.

You might consider an overhaul of your cooling system. Flush the coolant, replace the Thermostat to a cooler temp, and clean in front of the AD condesnor, and also infront of the radiator. If you do a search here, you will find hours of good reading.

And while you're at it, tune the whole car up so you can start a new history on it. Like Craig said, maintainence on the cooling system is never a bad idea. You'll still get up there in temps when you're stopped but that's supposed to happen. The benefit will be that when you get moving, the temps will drop quicker than a dirty and old system would.

Around 210 in winter time. Between 216-229 in summer time. 300 at track.:Steer

Wiper not shutting off could be the a defective park switch.

This is normal the coolant raise fast at idle. I forgot is the standard temperature the fan starts. I think that is something like 217 or 220. I replaced the fan switch with an aftermarket. The fan start at 205 and stops at 195.

That is normal if you are using stock Tstat, and chip, but my oil temp never sees above 180 usually unless I am really having fun :D.
