new motor for my 1989

Ok that dreaded time is here! Had 94k on my vett. when I was forced to punch it hard to get out of harms way the other morning ! (that or get rear ended by a speeding 18 wheeler!) I lost a head gasket on the pass.side rear of the block. Temp shot up fast! But I was only a mile from home and nurced it in. Hopeing that the alum. head isnt warped! My mech. at the vett.shop tells me 1500 to 2000 bucks worst case. Nat. you have to do the other side and the intake manifold gasket, might as well do the water pump too as long as your in there right? Now finished id have an l-98 with 94 k on it. A crate l-98 installed would be about 4500 bucks. Do these prices seem ok to you guys? Now, if im in for 4500 bucks anyway.....hehe (this is where the wife picks up the hachet) why not go for tyhe zz4 383? Is there a better choise in this price range? Who has the best deals? Work is to start this comming week if I decide to just do the repair work. Any input would be great ! thank you! see ya on the road!! contact me at , captbane@yahoo.com or here. Thanks, Doug C.

Sold the harley, have 13 k to spend on getting my 89 up and going ! What do I do? Want a new motor, trans is auto. 1989 coupe. any ideas?

You could sell the 89' and then buy a C5 with the money. They're getting more and more affordable with the release of the C6.

selling the 89

yes could do that edmond, but still would have to spend almost 2k to repair the heads,if they arnt warped

You can build a hella 383 stroker (or bigger), ad a D44, and have your tranny rebuilt to hanle it all for that kinda bank! I've done it for less :D Lotsa your ownn labor would be required, but you can get all the help you need here :beer

You could get some nice Edelbrock heads for $1,300, a pair of TPIS coated headers for $750, a nice cam for $275, Edelbrock intake for $400, large tube runners for another $400, port out your plenum with a dremel, 1.6 roller rockers for $200, Vortex air intake system for $270, high flow cat for $150, nice cat back for $700 (stainless) and you're pretty much ready to go.

Throw in a custom burned chip for a couple hundred more with a higher stall torque converter.

And make sure to keep in mind that you're going to run into problems with a car that has that much age on it. Nothing wrong with it, just the natural things that wear out like belts and electrical items and hoses.

May as well get some shiny new valve covers! :D

It's a lot of work but it's definitely worth it. Driving the car and the :D it brings to your face makes it all worthwhile.

You got 13k ?? get a used head. fix it to run , sell , buy the C5 with lower miles and more hp I would call it a no brainer .
not being a smart axx just what I would do .

I see that you’re in the New York...

With 13k to play with, why not sit on the cash until spring -- buy something a little newer ie. C5. I too sold a Harley (Heritage Softail Classic) to purchase my Corvette.

You could even park that 13k in a six month CD and earn money. True, it wouldn’t be a cash windfall, but you’d earn money without lifting a finger. In six months, it’d be April, no insurance to pay on a idle car as well.

If your wanting brute strength, I’ve seen Z06’s in the low 30k range. I’m seeing more and more C6’s on the road... C5 prices are only going to get better if you are a buyer. JMHO

Amen to that Edmond, the C5 is a lot of car for the money and there many of them up for sale that are in very good condition. Worth a look if you’re in the market for a late model Corvette.

Waiting stinks, but it'll be worth it. :upthumbs

Unless you can't live without this car, I would sell it. Take the cash and bail out for a c5. With that much on the odo, it will turn into a money pit sooner than later. Good luck.....

if it were me i would have bought one of scott schaffroffs killer street engines 472 ci. 595 hp. and drive in traffic all day long and eat c5 zo6s like they were volkswagons.

I agree. I hate to wait but this time I think you will find it worth the wait. I drove my '88 coupe as a DD for 4 years. Once I got my '02 vert I never drove the C4 anymore so I finally sold it.:D
