So the original label on my gas tank was still there after 29 years!!! It's not in great shape at all, but wondering if spending a ton of money having in treated would be worth it in the long run. Do you think it's worth saving for long term increased value of the car?

Yes.

I don't know how much monetary value it would add but to have an original 74 BB, #s matching WITH the tank sticker!!!....I think it would certainly have great appeal to many future purchasers.
Carefully remove it and save it.

With the overwhelming lack of documentation from Chevrolet back then, that tank sticker is the ONLY thing that accurately documents your car as concrete truth. It is worth ten times it's weight in gold.

How can you say you won't give up the tank sticker to the prospective buyer when your original question was if it was worth keeping and restoring it for added value???

You have to tell the prospective buyer in order for you to prove additional value that the appraisal will show.

With a big block '74, the tank sticker will be an intricate part of the car and it's value.

Sounds to me like you knew the answer to this before you asked the question.

Chuck,

The sticker would go with the car. How would I avoid selling the sticker??? NOT SELL THE CAR :)

A few other people thought the same... separating the car from the sticker.

c5d thought so too.

With the description you have under Corvette Ownership, you know what you have, you know what it's worth. I would have thought that it obvious to you that saving and protecting the tank sticker is absolutely what you do.

I'd treat it, cover it, and have a copy of it in the car for conversations. It would be a good idea to put a copy where the original one was.

Tank stickers are less relevant on 'newer' old Corvettes for the simple reason that the engine configuration is coded into the VIN tag. In other words, you don't need a tank sticker to prove that it's a big block. If you had other rare options that might make the car more interesting and/or more valuable then the tank sticker would help document this fact.

I think the tank sticker is extremely relevant and important to EVERY Corvette.

The engine is just one piece of the puzzle.

Did the car actually come with the amfm, or did you change it from amfm stereo?

Was the hardtop actually factory and did it come through with Vinyl from the factory or was that done to increase value without documentation for proof?

Did it come with blackwall, lettered, or whitewall tires from the factory?

Etc.

You make it sound like if you know the engine, there's nothing left to know.

I say the tank sticker is relevant for every Corvette even when you know the engine and it doesn't have to be to prove a rare option.

Mine Mine Mine Mine!!!

Well, I'm not ever planning on selling my 78, but AFTER me and AFTER you...someone will want that tank sticker. A family member or the person who purchases your vette to add $ to the estate of your survivors.
Heidi

Im also planning on living for ever, so that I can always take off the T-tops and sink my foot into the last large displacement Vette ever built. Touche!

You know, as quick as the C5's are, it just isn't the same as the power, torque, sound, and feeling of the big block.

Excellent 74bigblock!!

Chuck

Cheers to that Chuck.. especially since she's bored 030, headers, roller rockers, cam and more. C5's look out! Unfortunately, C6 is on the horizon, and warrants fear in anyone with a heavy right foot that does not own one.

That's why my C5's in the shop as we speak having 4.10's installed. I can't wait!

The original question was with respect to long term increased value of the car, not historical or emotional interest.

Whether a car is worth more with one type of tire or not is highly debatable. There's not really many options in '74 other than the motor that will have a substantial impact on selling price.:beer

Historical and emotional interest is an important part if not most of the value with these cars short term or long term. A true original with the tank sticker is certainly more valuable than without. Even if it doesn't add to value, it will sustain it's value and marketability. It should get more money and/or sell faster.

How can it be highly debatable that the closer the originality, the more a car is worth. That's just the way it is!!!

The options I mentioned are in fact options for a 1974. I NEVER mentioned SUBSTANTIAL impact on selling price. I'm talking impact small or large.

It's amazing how the deeper a thread gets, the more somebody tries to add something that was never mentioned in order to justify their cause.

It's the latest, but hopefully not the last... :D

Hi

Tank stickers are reproduced.
I saw a photo of one and they look original.
Don't know if in 30 years time from now, this sticker will be worse anything.
It's obviously not worse anything as long as you keep the car.:beer
Who has experience with this reproduction tank ( build ) sheets ?
How good are they ?
Could this stickers fool a knowledgeable person after they got aged on the tank for 30 years +.
:r
