Anyone replace a power steering control valve?...Mine was leaking so I had a new one put on(I watched) and now the steering is very hard when I turn right...the mechanic adjusted the valve for left and right pull...could it be a defective valve?...steering was ok before the replacement...I also had all hoses replaced...:confused

Thanks...
P.S., I used a part made by A-1 Cardone(original equipment rebuilt part)...should I have used a GM part or an OEM part?

In the GM Service manual there is a procedure for balancing the control valve. It takes all of five minutes and is CRITICAL to normal driving. If your mechanic didn't balance the valve I would do three things: 1. buy a GM Service Manual 2. balance the valve (VERY easy) 3. find a new mechanic.

ps you can buy the GM manual at www.ncrs.org and click on the store logo.
Go to your year and buy it!

Cardone's are junk! They have very poor quality control. I went through 3 of them before I got one that didn't pull.

The first one didn't thread onto the relay rod all the way.
The second one turned left, but not right because of RTV in the valve.
The third one drove like I had no power steering at all.
The fourth one is working (for now).

I didn't get an original because of tooling problems at the factory which resulted in a 6 week backlog.

Ouch...I will be getting rid of the pos Cardone and get a new GM valve...thanks for the info....:w

I doubt the Cardone people even test these valves before the monkey puts it in the box. My parts guy was very understanding, but it was way too much trouble doing it myself 3 times. I tried getting one through Mid-America, but they back ordered it after I ordered it and ended up cancelling the order. Have your mechanic get a New one, not a rebuilt OEM. He probably won't have to balance the new one.

We are now on the second new GM valve...the power steering return hose keeps leaking at the fitting...tried 2 new hoses so far....now the mechanic ordered a third GM valve and hose and will put it on GMs tab....just waiting for parts to arrive...:ugh
