78 Pace Car imposter
I wound up buying the "clone". The paint code on the tag definitely shows light grey over dark grey. It has the alloy wheels and the Oyster leather interior. OK, Anniversary model. It was painted (by the dealer?) in the Pace Car color scheme. I can accept that. Now, I was looking at Silver Anniversary pictures and they don't have a spoiler on them. This one does. Is this just one more step that somebody took to make it look like a pace Car? I don't believe it was an option, or am I wrong?

probably. The pace car option included special front and rear spoilers.

The Pace Cars also had different serial numbers than all the other 78's. The first 4 numbers, Ithink it is, are different. If I rember correctly the PC's started with 4. I can look it if you would like, but it will be after the 4th before I'll have time.

I have checked the VIN. It definitelyh is NOT a Pace Car.

Pace Car spoilers were factory option in 79. The eighth number on a Pace Car VIN is 9, 4 on a regular Vette. This is my FIRST post!!

What condition is your vette in and do you plan to make any changes?

The car is in fairly good shape. It needs little stuff. First off a front end alignment. The T-Tops are cracked, but do not leak. I am missing part of the T-Top securing strap. It has an after market radio in it. The clock doesn't work. As I said, little things. The body is in really good shape. One of the 2 previous owners bumped the nose, so there is a little bit of spider webbing there. Since thgen, a bumper has been attached. I will get some pictures tonight, but I don't know how to post them.

Sounds like it is in pretty good shape, overall.
I was curious to know if you would be returning it to the SA paint scheme but it seems the current paint does not need to be repainted. A case of "It isn't broke, so why fix it".

My clock doesn't work, either. How are the tops cracked and can they be repaired, or will you need to replace them?

Just the glass is cracked at the corners. The guy I bought it from (2nd owner) thought that maybe someone pressed down too hard when putting them in. I am considering the "re-glassing" I saw somewhere for $369 ea, rather than the $1,000+ ea to replace them.

I have been told by serveral people to remove the t-tops before jacking or putting the car on a lift. The body could flex and crack a glass top. That was good enough for me to always take the tops off first.

I have the same problem with the passenger side T-top. I found a site that will do the reglassing your talking about. I haven't ordered anything from this place but maybe someone out there can tell you something about Riks Corvettes Parts in Morganton NC

http://www.riksvet.com/

When you go to the online catalog link and use the category pulldown menu for t-tops you'll find a price of $395 for each side.

Here's the info he gives for the service.

"Send us your broken glass T-Tops and we'll send them back to you with new glass installed. The refurbishing includes removing your broken glass, weatherstrips and hardware from the frame, cleaning and inspecting the frame. Then a new glass panel is installed on the frame, along with your original weatherstrip and hardware. If you want new weatherstrips, they may be purchased and installed at the same time.

Due to the fact that the original LOF brand mirrored/blue glass is no longer available, if you replace just one side it will not match the old mirrored/blue top still on your car. Only available with black smoke or mirror/bronze glass."

Replace the mechanical clock with a quartz 'clone'. You can buy them from just about anyone. This is a problem on ALL C3's.

I bought one from Corvette America last year... still tickin' and no adjustment needed yet. Part # 33521.

Looking forward to seeing you in Red Wing on July 31 or Aug. 1,don"t worry about bringing and showing your car just because it is not "perfect" very few of the cars that will be there are, they were made to drive and enjoy not just look at. You will have plenty of time to work on the little things that need fixing, the big thing as a new owner is to get it cleaned-up and detailed and all that takes is a nice day, some plain old soap and water and a few detailing products. Enjoy the ride and see you in Red Wing. Tom in Apple Valley
