Can anyone point me to the right paint brand/ shade to use when restoring 66 hubcaps? I have the opportunity to swap my 65's with a correct pair of 66's but will probably have to repaint the coves. Anyone do this before? Any tips?

Thanks in advance MC

66 Hubcap Repair

Hi!

I have completed the repairs on my 65 hubcaps. I painted the spoke edges using dark gray cast paint. It seemed very close to the original color and sheen. I made a wooden doll or drift to straighten the outer edge of the hubcap. I curved it to the same shape as the edge and used a rubbing technique to determine the rounded edge. (Graphite guide coat by 3M) I then used a soft leather pad on a soft wood board and tap the dents out. The hardest part for me to restore was the spokes. I made wooden molds that matched the shape of the spokes and gently taped the dents out using a body hammer. The spokes are very thin and if you over work one area the metal will have a tendency to stretch. I haven't figured out how to repair a stretched area. (On heaver metals they peened the metal to shrink it but I do not believe this process will work on hubcaps) The caps must have turned out pretty good; an NCRS member complimented me on the hubcaps.

I practiced on a hubcap that was unrestorable first!

Hope this helps!
