Paint Problems

I recently purchased a 76 custom vette which was a show car in the late 80's early nighties. It got bumped in the rear end about a month before I purchased it (it was still a great buy) only thing is the paint was done in 86 and is Candy Apple over two of Gold. I'm having a real hard time finding even a close match and most paint shops just don't want to go there. Has any one any advice, the rear bumper could be removed

I can understand why shops dont want to work on it,its a pita to match or blend,even if they have the correct color by the same manufacturer.That color is still made by alot of companies with house of color being the main one.PPG and Dupont makes it also.Its hard to match because its a gold basecoat with a transparent red over it.Depending on how many coats of the transparent red is sprayed will depend on how the color turns out.Sooo wothout knowing how many coats were applied its a pita to match.

Thanks for note. I spoke with the original owner who says 2 gold 2 clear but is unsure of the Candy. I would estimate 3 of Candy just by the thickness showing at the damged area it may be more but not a whole lot. The guy polished it religiously and in some areas (corners) the gold is starting to show through so the Candy can't have too many coats. I'd be happy with a close match (better than the white that shows right now) as the area of damage is around the rear lights so there are lots of changes of plane and therefore the shades vary by default as it were. I would probably intend to repaint the whole car in a few years but not right now. I 'm also prepared to settle for best I can get but nobody's keen to even take a chance. I'll keep seraching for the guy the painted it fpr some advice. I'm told he retired from Niagra Canada to Florida.

I would talk to the guys at House Of Kolor if it were my car. If you could liberate a sample of paint from the bumper (several square inches) and send it to them they could probably supply base gold and color that would be very close if not right on. They sell so much of these types of paint that I think they would be your best hope. Keep in mind that candys fade at a faster rate than production colors due to less UV protection built in the product.

They might even be able to recommend someone in a reasonable distance from you that uses a lot of their products and has a good reputatiion. May even be a custom motorcycle shop but you're just painting the rear bumper. It always used to be a well known fact that if you needed to repair candys you just painted the whole car. With the new products available today this may no longer be true.

Thanks for the advice Tom. The original paint shop I took it to had been talking to house of kolor but I'm not sure how much serious effort they gave it I guess I'll have to pursue this myself.
