I know some guys have done this, but what type of prep and what kind of paint did you use?

I would think any primer and paint would suffice if you also change the existing brake fluid over to silicone fluid (DOT 5) before painting. Silicone fluid will not eat paint or absorb water, so you gain two benefits there.

I can't say this with 100% certainty, but I seem to recall being told by various ASE Master Mechs that you shouldn't just "switch" to a silicone system as there are (or 'can be'?) severe incompatibilities/problems that will arise due to the existing hardware.

I wish I remembered what they said, but I don't. All I know is that we just put in a 100% brand new, complete brake system in my car (cylinder, lines, proportioning valve, calipers, etc.) and there was a reason we stuck with conventional DOT4 brake fluid versus silicone.

That's very interesting. I've never heard such a thing. I've pumped out several of my cars in the past and switched over to DOT5 and never had any problems.

I'd be interested in hearing from others on this board about this as I'm about to do the switch to my 66 within the next few weeks.

Thanks,
Doug

I did some searching on these forums and there is alot of information on the topic of silicon (dot 5) versus dot 3 and dot 4 fluid.

If you aren't purging your brake system and rebuilding, you would be best served to stick with the dot 3 or dot 4 fluid.

Of course those eat away at paint, which I assume addresses your first topic of what paint to use to avoid damage from fluid?
