I don't have an owner’s manual, in the process of procuring one and Chilton's doesn't cover this but the light for the passive entry system stays lit and my control fob doesn't work. Should I assume the system is broken or is there a way to turn it on and off and my system is simply off?? I have no way to tell if my fob is working so I'll try to take it apart and replace the battery as well.

I think I found my answer using a search. I've been searching for "alarm" and it's really PKE so I've found a lot of useful information already. Thanks

I have the same problem

I have a similar problem, only worse. My PKE hasn't worked reliably since I bought it used. I also have a 1996 torch red vette, coincidentally. I stopped using it after awhile. However, one time it popped open the rear hatch while I was on the interstate, which I didn't care for. Now, I have noticed that the PKE warning light will occasionally come on, then go off, without apparent effect. Finally, it has gone "nuts" again, and popped the rear hatch several times while parked/off, and I had to pull a fuse to get it to stop. I haven't troubleshooted it yet, but am guessing it is the receiver, which is not easy to get to from what I can tell.

Please let me know if anything you found out might help me. Thanks.

I replaced the PKE receiver, and this seemed to fix the stated problem. NOW, it won't turn off without fiddling with the passenger door lock. This is a "small" problem, and probably is due to something wrong in the door. I no longer get the PKE trouble light, nor do I get spurious actuations, and the system has worked properly in every other respect since then. When I retested the old PKE receiver, it flashed a "12" trouble code for bad memory. I don't recall that it did this before, however, when I tried to test it last time. I sent a response to someone else about my thoughts on the PKE diagnostic mode, which you may want to look up. It is HARD to understand what it is flashing, at least that's how I see it. I was surprised that it only took me an hour to get the dashboard cover off. I thought it would be harder to remove. I did have to remove the two screws that hold the ventilation ductwork to the dashboard center vent area and pry it up before I could get the PKE receiver out. I was able to buy a new one from Superior Chevrolet (800-728-8267, Chris) for $201.14 including shipping. I was hoping that I wasn't the only one with this problem. Let me know if you do this and it fixes the problem.

Thanks, I'm still waiting on a service manual but I suspect it's the box directly below the "chime" box I discovered when I had my dash off. I agree, the dash is pretty simple to remove so this shouldn't be too hard to tackle. I'm suprised I don't see the PKE reciever on eBay but it's never listed and seems to be a common item that goes out on these cars.

The PKE receiver IS the box under the chime box. It is pretty buried. I didn't know these receivers went out a lot. Chris at Superior Chevrolet said he hasn't seen much demand for them. By the way, I DO have the service manual, but I don't think you really need it. It helps explain how to take the dash cover off without tearing something up, but if you are careful, you should be able to do it without detailed help.

Thanks, can you post the part number? I want to check out a few sources for pricing before I commit to Superior Chevrolet. Thanks Rick

Zixxer,

I have the factory directions for removal of the upper trim pad. It's for a 95, but believe they are the same. If interested let me know at roman67844@cs.co.

I've got the directions, I had to remove my dash to seal the front edges that were coming up. Actually turned out great and I know there's zero chance that front edge is coming back up :-)

When I had the dash off I found the "chimer" and I figured the box below was the security/PKE box.

I've found some online part dealers and the prices are so different on items I wanted to get the actual part number to compare items from site to site.

The PKE receiver is part number 10261112 Receive 10.485, per my receipt. If you find a better deal, let us know.

Thanks, I will. I assume you mean $104.85 or is that another reference number and the amount $200 +- was what you paid?

I noted earlier that I paid $201 for the receiver. I don't know why "Receive 10.485" was on my receipt, so I included it, but it is NOT what I paid.

GMPartsdirect.com

$168.86

$202.63 with their shipping charges!! Must be hand picked and packed in rose petals.

Took a long time to find that one, just about everyone else is $251.01

Ultimately it's a good deal for someone like me that would have to have an item shipped anyways. My local dealer couldn't touch that price so even with shipping it's cheaper then I can get anywhere else......

Thanks for the info. That's a pretty good savings. I didn't do too bad then at $201. The list/dealer price is $298.
