Folks,

Please enlarge the attached picture and tell me if the arrow is pointing at the PCV valve...

HELP NEEDED MOST URGENTLY

PCV Valve

Sure looks like a PCV valve, and it's in the correct location.
Are you going to replace it?
I had one go bad in a carburated 327 many decades ago. Caused excessive oil consumption and really bad idle. I got mislead into trying the rattle test (if it rattled it was OK - NOT) and the blow hard test (if it passed air one way and not the other it was OK - NOT). Bought a service manual and discovered the recommeded test was to remove it from the manifold, keeping it connected to the vacuum source hose, and plug up the open port (put your finger over it). If the engine slowed, valve was OK. If the engine idle smoothed out - bad valve - YES.
Now this was a carb engine so the test may be invalid for the LT-1. But hope this helps.

BTW oil consumption returned to 'normal' or less than 1/4 quart in 3000 miles. The engine now has 148,000 miles on it, continues the same 'consumption' and does the century in second gear with a 3.36 rear.

If you have over 50 th then it needs to be replaced.

Yes that is it on the drivers side under the plastic cover.;)

My car is at 32K miles and I do not have a problem with the PCV valve (yet). I am trying to learn a test procedure; that's why I asked you folks and thx for the answer.

The procedure says "Idle the engine after a cold start and get it warm, uplug the PCV valve and observe oil fumes coming out of the hole. Very little oil fumes should be visible if not any. More then " very little" indicates a potential problem with the valves or the piston rings"...

Correct???

That procedure (looking at the fumes from the crank-case) will test the valve seals and rings, but not the PCV valve. They're so cheap here (<<$10) I just buy a new one every few 10,000 miles.

Jmccloud, I am getting ready to inspect a 90 Corvette for a friend of mine. I want to be sure I do not look like a.s when I go to see the car...

Thx

Message received.

It was Ben Franklin (or was it Abraham Lincoln) that said, "When half the people in the room think you're crazy, why open your mouth and convince the other half?"

Seriously, I used to do a lot of consulting. The most powerful tool is silence. When you find something you recognize, note it down (actually write on a notepad - but let no one see it). But otherwise, silence is strength. Ask all the questions you can think of, just don't give opinions until you're alone with your buyer.

Hope this helps,
John

JMCCLOUD, I understand the point, thanks much. But one potential problem in our culture in Turkey is, if I do a lot of inspection / ask all sorts of questions and find out that the car is in good condition the buyer may ask for a higher price... It is a strange culture here... Corvette owners are normally rich people and they have a tendency to get irritated from being inspected...
