Hello Gang :)

As some of you know, our baby is in the shop for a re-ring job. I thought it appropriate to take the opportunity to carefully check things over and clean things up really well before they go back together. Well, here are a couple of pics of a fully cleaned head:)

For those that haven't seen pics of the internals of your LS1/LS6, you may find this a little interesting

I'll post more pics of things in various stages of disassembly later; this is all I have right now.

Nice job of cleaning. Just wondering , how did it look before cleaning.

I do have some pics of the "dirty" heads, but they are on film. Once I burn up the rest of the roll and get them developed, I'll post them - and more pics of various engine components:)

So, stay tuned.....

More Pics of the "surgery"

Here are some more pics of the re-ring procedure our car is going through.

Here is a pic of the front sub-frame assembly

Whose says that there is not very much room in a C5 engine compartment;)

Notice how thin the C5 radiator is:eek It works fine, but if you get debris on the radiator, its easy to see why you'd have overheating problems.

Here is a pic of the "dirty" heads; notice the carbon in the exhaust ports

Here is a view of the partially disassembled block

Here is a view from the rear of the block; notice how the cam gear is visible at the top of the block

Another shot of the block. Look at the level of carbon build-up on the pistons (one has been cleaned a little) after 24,000+ miles

The good news is that things appear to be in good shape; no ridges at the top of the cylinders, the bores are nice and shiny smooth, nothing shows signs of wear. Even the clutch looks almost new.

BTW, the shop manager here used to manage the shop for a large trucking dealer (the BIG rigs). When he saw the clutch he recognized the design, materials and manufacturer. His comments were "holy &^%%$#$ that is one stout clutch to put in a car"

More to come later as the process continues...

I took a quick look at your recent posts but didn't see why your motor had to be taken apart. What's the quick history? Sorry if this is old news in the forum.

After about 13,000 miles on the car, it started burning oil. About 1/2 quart every 600 to 800 miles. The vast majority of these miles are in 6th at about 75-80 mph (1800 rpm).

GM decided to re-ring the car; the fix for oil consumption in the C5's
