Changed the battery in the FOB which tested out okay at 3V but the FOB still didn't work. Both door and hatch buttons not working.

Tried re-programming the FOB several times but the PKE light doesn't stay on when FOB is nearby, meaning programming not working. When you walk away the car locks and horn beeps but when you return to the area it doesn't unlock. After the key is used to unlock, the FOB doesn't lock again until a programming attempt is made again, then only for one cycle.

Tried the Diagnostic check in the service manual but didn't get any codes up. I notice that on some diagnostic tests the ignition is turned to 'on without starting' to perform the test after grounding the pins. The PKE Test only states to leave the key in the 'locked position'. IS THIS CORRECT?

Anyone know the best place to get another FOB. Hopefully that's all that wrong.

Your Dealer should be able to check your FOB and see if it is signalling. I just went thru this on my 94 and ended up buying a new FOB ($150 or so). Had to follow the directions in owners book to re-programm and had to do it three times till it finally worked. That was a couple of months ago and it has worked every since. The new Fob comes with directions to program.

1. Remove transmitter from card. Place transmitter and any optional transmitters 10 feet or more from car.

2. Turn ignition switch to the ON position.

3. Push the TRIP/ODO button on the Driver Information Center (DIC).

4. WITHIN 5 SECONDS, push and hold the FUEL/INFO button on the DIC until the PKE light on the DIC comes on and stays on.

5. Turn the ignition to the OFF position, but leave the key in the ignition. The PKE light will come on and begin flashing.

6. Bring one transmitter into range. When the system recognizes the transmitter the PKE light will stay on.

7. To program an optional transmitter, move the newly programmed trnasmitter out of range and repeat step 6.

8. Remove thew key from the ignition or turn the ignition to ON. The transmitters are now programmed to the vehicle.

Now to turn off the system:

1. Take the ignition key out of the ignition.

2. Press DOOR on the transmitter until the door locks cycle ( about 2 seconds).

To turn the system back on repeat the above steps.

To check that the system is off, turn on the ignition. The PASSIVE KEYLESS ENTRY light on the DIC should not come on.

Just so you know, each of the steps is crucial when programming. There is no room for error. I found I would screw one or the other things up so that's why it took me three times to do it right. About a 10 minute job.

The range ofd the PKE is approx. 1.

Disregard this mess.

Thank you.....

At least your's shows some signs of life, which hopefully means that the receiver is still OK. My PKE was completely unresponsive and it ended up being a bad receiver. It's ~$200 and a PITA to replace - it's buried in the dash, behind the heater and radio controllers. The only way to get to it was by removing the dash pad.

good luck

The range off the PKE is approx. 10 ft.
Try moving it 30 ft. away or so???????

You shud also check the operation of the door/ajar & hatch pins.

Having a PKE problem kind of like that myself. I came out to garage Sunday morning to find rear hatch open and alarm not on. replaced Batt. in FOB and attempted to reprogram as above. Still no luck. Could not get PKE light to flash.

PKE light did come on for about 10 min. on the way into work this morning.

Now light is out, FOB does nothing, will not lock, unlock open rear hatch...

Any ideas? All was working fine till Sat Night/Sunday morning.

Even tried extra FOB same results.

It's a 1996 LT4.

The instructions that vette-dude gave are right but on #3 you have to push it twice.
I'm trying to program mine but I can't get the PKE light to flash once I turn the key to off. Also does the key fob have a very light rattle in it when you shake it?:confused

PKE programming.
1. Move all transmitters out of range.
2. Ignition to "run" position.
3. Trip odo button is pushed & released.
4. Trip odo button is pushed again & held for 5 secs.
5. Within 5 secs push & hold the fuel info button for 10 secs.
The passive keyless entry tell tale lamp will come on continiously.
6. Ignition to the "lock" position, key remaining in the ignition,
The passive keyless entry tell tale lamp will now begin flashing...... Bring your fob into range now....The lamp shud remain continious until the fob is again out of range waiting to program the next fob.

The rattle is what activates the transmitter.

Try this & see if it helps???????:hb :hb :hb

I have tried 6 times both the push one and push twice versions. I have not tried the Rabbit version of pushing for 5 sec. on the second push of Trip odo button.
Fobs are in kitchen about 30 feet away.

I will go try it again.

thanks again for all the info.

PS - both FOBS do tend to rattle slightly...

OK here is the latest update:

Followed the Rabbit version. No PKE light comes on no matter how long I hoild the buttons in. All I see happening is the odom or the fuel info change between modes.

How do i tell if the PKE module in the dash is bad. I have new BAtts. in the FOBS and have tried them on another vette. So I cna rule that out. Does a code get sent that i can scan for?

Being your OBD II I think you would need a scanner. My 95 can show DTC'S by grounding a couple of pins on the DLC.

OK..is the 96 fob same as a 94?

Has anybody checked their PKE fuse? It's no. 26, 5 amp. in the I/P fuse panel.

I believe the FOB'S are the same.

fuse was OK. replaced it anyway just to be sure. I have a buddy w/ a scanner. Will see what I find out with it.

'96 Key Fob Programing

I recently purchased a '96 and one fob was not working. I replaced the battery and used the following procedure with both transmitters, and the system is now working fine.

1. Place transmitter/s (3 Max.) 10 feet or more from car.

2. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. (Do not start Engine)

3. Push the TRIP/ODO button on the Driver Information Center (DIC) TWICE!!!!!

4. WITHIN 5 SECONDS, push and hold the FUEL/INFO button on the DIC until the PKE light on the DIC comes on and stays on.

5. Turn the ignition to the OFF position (one click back from the "run" position). The PKE light will begin flashing. If you go to far you will be in the "key removal position, the PKE light will not flash, and you will need start over at step 1.

6. Bring one transmitter into range. When the system recognizes the transmitter the PKE light will stay on.

7. To program an optional transmitter, move the newly programmed transmitter out of range (PKE light will start flashing again) and repeat step 6.

8. The transmitters are now programmed to the vehicle.

9. To end programing and return to normal PKE operation, remove the key from the ignition or turn the ignition to ON.

I have tried that but it seems to go bad somewhere in step 4 as the PKE light never comes on.

I will have an ODBII scanner see what is stored this evening. Just wondering has anyone had to replace the in dash part of PKE system? If so how hard a job is it?

I had to hold the Trip/Odo button for about 30 sec, Also when you turn the key to off, only click back once not to the point you can remove the key....I tried it that way and my fob works now.:upthumbs

Glad you got it. That is what counts, and yes, the "off" position is one click back from the "run" position.

I edited my first reply to make it more clear.
