Quick question...

How does the big stock plastic distributor distributor/ignition shield attach on a 1979?
It wasn't attached when the car was bought a few weeks back, and I seriously can't see how it fits (there's a lot of wires and vacuum lines everywhere, and I don't see any fastening points). :confused

Anyone got any close-up pics??

Dan: Here is a photo of mine. It is however an 81 so I don't know if there is much difference. It simply sets over top of the dist. around the wires and clips under the air cover. The hood release cable runs over top that is what is fastened to the shield.

No difference at all. There is a ground cable as well that attaches to the valve cover bolt. You can find one on EBay every so often. It was used as a sheild between the radio and distributor limiting interference I believe.

They snap on to the top of the distributor. There is also a plastic ring which clips on to the top of each plug wire.

:)

It's been a while since I had the cover off, but as I recall (scratching head) the very front of the cover fits under the air clearer, there is a small lip with a small edge to help hold it in place.

I recall the underside of the cover had an aluminum sheild and didn't actually attach to the distributor ;shrug (Now hitting side of my head to help clear the OLD cobwebs) that's what the through lug connects to as an ingnition sheild, then braid connected to the valve cover back bottom bolt.

I can't remember if the side just slips down into a catch type device or it actually has a bolt on each side...

I'll go out to the shop this morning and take a look, I just don't trust my memory anymore :W

Yoda, no bolts hold it in place. As you mentioned, there is a front clip that holds it in place over the retaining ring. The Transmission Dipstick Tube also helps to keep it in place.

Thanks Jeff :thumb

I just got back from out back (the shop) and it has a wing nut near the top on the passengers side for the braided strap, and a plastic retainer on the top for the crossover hood cable and it fits like Jeff said.. All this exercise, both mental and physical is hard on an old Yoda, may be time for a Latte' or a nap :D

Dan,
Here is another angle. Mine's a small block, but I believe the shield is situated the same. Just don't FORCE it into place. The snuggest part is on the passenger side by the transmission dipstick. The shield is molded there (inverted) for the dipstick and should help you guide it on evenly. With the breather off, you will have to guide some wires out of the way as you're pushing the shield down in place. Here you can see the braided wire attached to the side. Finally the shield rest upon the distributor and clips under the breather cover as Dunzvett81 said. Actually mine doesn't "clip" it only appears to and is just resting on top. It ain't gonna go anywhere really, once it's down. Just remember--don't force it. If you have to force it, then something is binding against it. Sort of shimmy the shield as your'e pressing down.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help and pics.
It did take a lot of "shimmying" and moving of wires to eventually get that thing down there, not the best design if you ask me, but it's done. Hopefully won't be taking it off in the near future :-)

Thanks again y'll.
