Question: Possible new purchase

Hi folks,

New member here. I'm a C3 and C4 past owner, but I am looking at a really nice C6 and would like some info/opinions. The car is a 2005 Daytona Sunset Orange model with the 6 speed manual, and glass roof. I checked the NHSTA website and plugged in the VIN of the car and it looks like the roof recall and the low beam light recall has been done already. Car has 39,400 miles on it and they want $23,999 for it. According to the CarFax I would be the third owner and the car has been sitting at the dealer since last July. Car has lived in the Seattle/Portland area since it was purchased.

My questions are.....good deal (yes/no) What should I especially look for (or look out for) when I check it out, and do you see any potential problems with the lower mileage and the fact that it has been sitting for a bit. I plan to push for a new battery and possibly tires depending on how they look.

Really looking for some good advice here before I pull the trigger.

Check the serpentine belt for too many cracks. If it is the original, it may be dry rotted. Check the coolant and vacuum hoses. With the hood up, have them start the engine and use a flashlight to look at the balancer to see if it is wobbling. There have been a number of reports (not in the thousands) of the balancer elastomer band breaking down and the ring slipping on the hub. Definitely check the tires. Although by now the originals should have been replaced. Whether or not you get a new battery, purchase a CTEK battery maintainer for your car. The C6's have a lot of draw when left for extended periods (more than 2 weeks). Good luck with your negotiations.

A DSOM stick shift C6 is a pretty sought after combination. I wouldn't worry about the rubber goods - I'd replace them as a matter of routine on a 10 model year old car. Belts and hoses are cheap compared to almost anything else. I'd pay close attention to the clutch and the A/C. Both are wear items, and run well over a grand to completely sort out. The price sounds good for a nice example. HAVE FUN.

Belts and hoses are cheap compared to almost anything else. I'd pay close attention to the clutch and the A/C. Both are wear items, and run well over a grand to completely sort out. The a/c works great but when it's has been on for a while and I rev the engine there is a slight growl when it unwinds. The noise is hard to describe and high pitch growl is the only thing I can come up with. The noise goes away with the a/c off so I assume the noise is coming from the compressor. I purchased a really good extended warranty from my Credit Union and still have 3 years coverage left. Would appreciate if you could give me any advice.

The AC system is full of wear items, things that have a usable life, no matter miles. There are low and high pressure seals, a clutch, high pressure hoses and fittings, belts, pulleys/bearings. and the compressor internals. If the system loses its' charge for any reason, you can figure the dryer is toast too. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do to prevent any of the failures, except change belts and look for signs of pulley failure or maybe clutch noise and check freon level.

P.S. Check the a/c pulleys - they may be the source of the growl. Also check the idler and belt tensioner on the serpentine loop.
