Anyone had any problems with antennas from "Antennaworks' Precision Power Series not working?
Finally deceided to replace my old pwr antenna whos mast had been replaced twice before with a new, reportly better, greater reliabile carried by Mid-America. The 81 Vette doesn't make it especially easy (limited access space) to replace the antenna, plan was to do the job as part of the carpet replacement that was over due.
Carpet Project now delayed waiting for replacement antenna from Mid-America, they were very professional in their response to my problem and heres hoping the bad unit was a rare ocurrence. The new antenna comes with two directional wires and a black ground wire. Question is should the black wire connect to car frame or to the green wire (system common from control relay).
Update of installation results:
After many hours of trial and error realized this antenna is designed to operate as stand alone unit and as such is not compatabile to work with the 81 Corvette control relay/ circuit. Simpley stated the factory design works to reverse the polarity of the DC voltage applied to the antenna motor through the function of the control relay. The "AntnnaWorks" unit has a control relay built-in and as such only needs 12 VDC applied to the red wire (any "Hot All Ways" source) with fuse rating of at least 5 amps. I used the power from the driver power seat red wire as it exits the center console just aft of the parking brake handle. The Blue wire is spliced into the yellow wire coming from the radio in the center console area, forward of the rear storage bin wall. Antenna now works properly with the radio on/off switch. Thanks to those that provided responses. I can now moving ahead with my carpet replacement project.
Carpet replacement went very smoothly; Set from Mid-America fit very well with only minor trimming along the edges and around the center console and rear wheel wells. Overlaying the old carpet pieces allowed for rough placement of hole for seats & safety belts floor anchor bolts.
