Has anybody experienced unresponsive power sterring on an 84 on cold mornings? My car has to warm up a little before I can turn the wheels. It also seems to be a little stiff even after it has warmed up and the fluid is pretty dirty.

Thanks!

10 to 1 it isn't the Power steering...

I had the EXACT problem and here it is:

The problem your having is called morning sickness and your seems to be in its final stages, like mine. What it is, is the rack and pinion system.

The aluminum sheath that surrounds the inner parts has warped and had binded itself to the inner parts. After the warm up the aluminum finally lets in fluid AKA lubricates and your steering again.

Just go replace the rack they are around 150-200 bucks and simple to install. You will have to get an alignment done however.

Like I said I'll bet real money that this is the problem its extremly common.

They do however require the old one for a core.

From our very own :CAC knowledgebase comes this: 1984: Service Bulletin: Rack / Pinion Power Steering Valve Ring Service

Or, you can find it here at Corvette Fever:
One of the advancements in technology that makes the C4 such a great Corvette is the addition of rack-and-pinion steering. When these systems work properly, they’re great. When they wear out, they start to grab and get stiff. This is often referred to as "morning sickness." Many times, the rack is replaced but the rest of the system is left untouched, often with remnants from the damaged unit still lingering.

Thanks BigRed,

I suspected that big thing under there but wasn't sure (first time vet owner). I'm going to get in there and change it a.s.a.p.

I appreciate it!
