I'm in the process of replacing the drivers side power window motor and regulator. Everything is out of the car and the old motor is removed from the regulator mechanism. Does anyone know how to install the new motor to the regulator gear with the proper torsion spring pre-load?

Window regulator spring tension.

Look at the gear side, there should be a hole in it.
Than look at the other side of the regulator, you'll find another 1/4 inch hole, line those two holes up and insert a bolt, put the motor on, and remove the bolt and you'll have the proper pre-load. PG.

Hey Edj,
I have ordered a new power window motor and power lock actuator for my passenger side door. Any pointers you can share about getting the old units out and the new ones in?
Thanks,
Trenton

Edj,
I am also replacing them on the drivers side and i would also like to know any pointers to help.
Thanks,
Doug

Trenton/Doug,

The process really isn't all that bad. My window was stuck down. Good old GM made no provision to remove the window nuts in the down position so I had to drill access holes. If your window is up or you can get it up the is access holes inthe top of the inner door panel. Reach through and remove the 2 nuts and the "U" channel on the window. I removed all the other bolts and the upper window guides to get a little "wiggle room". Then carefully take out the window. The other components including the motor regulator assemble needs to be fished through the access holes in the inner door panel. This is somewhat tedious. I haven't got things back together yet so don't know how that will go. Good luck!!

You can go to CORVETTE MAGAZINE.com, there they show how to pull the regulator, repair some of it and replace it . Its under window regulator roller section.

Thanks Ed,
Luckily my window stopped in the up position. My vette is my only car so I have to drive it to/from work every day. Our rainy season is starting here in Florida so I was fortunate. I am not going to replace the regulator just the motor. Do you think I can do that without removing any other parts?
Trenton

Trenton,

Unfortunatels you can't get at the motor mounting bolts without removing the regulator. Make sure that you pre-load the torsion spring by aligning the holes in the arm and gear and installing a temporary bolt and nut before removing the old motor. It's now safe to remove the old motor and assemble the new motor. When the new motor is assembled you can remove the tempotay bolt and nut.

That sucks. I was hoping that this would be a one day project. Do you think that is possible?:boogie

My window, power window motor, and regulator are already out. Unfortunately i didn't take them out myself, it was like that when I bought it so what I really need is how to put it back together.
Doug

Sure it's possible but you may find other worn parts that you would want to replace as long as you went to the trouble taaking it out.

hi all. if your window is stuck in the down position before replacing the motor or tearing in to the door try powering the motor directly from the battery. this sometimes frees up the motor. did this on my 79 last week and got the motor to work. relubed everything i could find and is still working today. my motor had a two pin connector, one pin for up and one for down.

Thank you for suggesting that, it will help a lot. I also found another article on something else that i have to do there.

Be careful though. My motor had a dead short across the terminals. If this is the case with yours the sparks will fly if you connect directly to the battery.

What parts did you lube other than the motor gear and rack?

Being the rollers are made of plastic and have bearings I wasn't aware you were supposed to lube them because it would make them slip instead of roll.

I finished replacing my passenger side window motor and regulator. Everything worked fine until I had the door panel back on and tried the window with the door closed. The window went up and then stuck in that position. The motor still runs but the window doesn't move. For some reason the motor gear is not making contact with the regulator gear. Has anybody seen this problem before?
