No. With the door open the motor still turns but does not engage the regulator gear. I don't know how it could happen the way the motor mounts to the regulator assembly doesn't leave any room for the motor or reg. gear to shift. I guess I'll have to take the door apart again and pull the whole thing out.

I had the pleasure of taking my passenger side motor out today. Despite the posts to the contrary, it can be done without removing the regulator if it's in the up position.
Simply use a big cable tie (or two) to secure the regulator arm up to the door frame throught the upper hole on the center of the door panel. Then the motor mount bolts can be loosened and the bottom regulator rivet drilled out. The regulator can be pushed in to clear the motor gear and shaft that engage to the regulator gear.
Then the whole motor comes out through the hole.
My motor wasn't bad after all, and niether were the connections to it in the door, but I took it apart and rebuilt and lubed everything anyway.

The motor would go up, but not down. If I jumpered the motor to the opposite terminals, it would go down but not up, with the switch in the "up" position.
But if I unplugged the connector and checked the voltages from the connector to ground, there was 12V on each of the two leads when the switch was activated in either direction. So my switch must be working, but not delivering enough current to power the motor in the down direction

Remember if you do this, the return ground is the door frame, not the other terminal on the motor. That's a dead short across the two sets of motor windings, one up, one down, with the return ground at the motor case.

So now it looks like I'm going to take the shift console apart to troubleshoot the switches.

The regulator to motor assembly is determined by the hole in the motor mount bracket and the case bolts the hold the motor to the regulator. Everthing needs to be centered with the bushing in the bracket with the flat spot on one side that goes over the gear shaft that engages the regulator rack gear. If it's not lined up properly, the gears won't mesh.
